Nostalghia (1983)

Yet it's amazing to think that Tarkovsky had his fans, and was able to make films at all, especially in 1983, when moviegoers spent more money on Return of the Jedi in one week than they did on the slightly more thoughtful The Right Stuff during its entire run. MTV had just launched, and Flashdance was another of the year's top hits. This was a time that, not only were people thinking in shorter and shorter bursts, but they were being encouraged to do it. read more...

Red Desert (1964)

The great Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni continues his theme of alienation and disconnect with his first color film, Red Desert, and the effect is perhaps even more astounding than in his black and white films. Now, more so than using just shapes and spaces, Antonioni now gets to play with bright colors, and lack of colors. Everyone agrees that, in this regard, the film is a masterpiece, but the film once had -- and perhaps still has -- many detractors, arguing that Antonioni's musings don't amount to much. read more...

Days of Being Wild (1991)

Wong Kar-wai's atmospheric second film Days of Being Wild finally makes its official U.S. premiere. The film has passionately divided audiences since its 1991 Hong Kong debut, winning several HK awards, but flopping at the box office. Leslie Cheung plays Luddy, an arrogant serial seducer who picks up and abandons women without a thought. When he seduces a beautiful shop girl (Maggie Cheung), it starts a La Ronde-like chain of events that significantly changes the lives of everyone involved, including co-stars Andy Lau and Tony Leung Chiu-wai. Wong's always-striking visual style (beautifully shot by cinematographer Christopher Doyle) uses floating, neon colors and extreme angles to emphasize disconnected souls. read more...

Youth (2015)

As with his Oscar-winning The Great Beauty, Italian director Paolo Sorrentino brings a gorgeous, dreamy visual style to this English-language effort, even if it's not quite as profound as wants to be. Sorrentino continues to channel Italian cinema history, copying Fellini again, and Antonioni as well (the movie is also dedicated to the late Francesco Rosi). But while those directors used their own style to tackle their own themes, Sorrentino feels lost in their shadows, indirectly using tools from their kits, stuck between art and commercialism. read more...
