Schindler's List (1993)

It's hard to imagine a time when Steven Spielberg was considered an outsider. As of the early 90s, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had nominated Spielberg a few times for Oscars but had snubbed him just as often. He was viewed as a boy wonder who made exciting entertainments and little else. His first few attempts at "serious" filmmaking wound up as overly saccharine efforts like The Color Purple, Empire of the Sun and Always. read more...

Beautiful Boy (2018)

This movie has a lot of hugging. Expertly acted to be sure, the drug addiction drama Beautiful Boy is also grueling and repetitive; it's so bland and detached that it wobbles between making drug use look sexy and being an after-school special. Timothy Hutton even shows up in one scene as a doctor, explaining and diagraming the scientific facts about the horrors of crystal meth use. read more...

The Judge (2014)

The Judge is about as lightweight as a Hollywood drama can get; its plot is fairly vanilla, everything is predictable, and the music cues come in at just the right time to remind us that it's only a movie. But I like it very much, for two reasons. One is that it features extremely strong performances by its two leads, Robert Downey Jr., and Robert Duvall. These two guys are among the heavyweights of today, and it's a real pleasure to watch them work. The second reason is that director David Dobkin allows just a little extra space for the characters to stretch out, go a little deeper. Even while the lumpy pot awaits them around the next turn, they have a couple of minutes here and there to laugh, cry, scream, yell, hide things, reveal things, joke around, and fall in love. read more...

Freeheld (2015)

Julianne Moore won her first Oscar for a not-very-good disease-of-the-week movie that everyone has surely forgotten about by now. It was a frustrating victory for an actress that has been great for decades and has given far greater performances in at least a dozen far greater movies. Now, as if encouraged by this dubious honor, she has done another disease-of-the-week movie, Freeheld, less than a year later. But this time it's coupled with a prestigious "based on a true story" issue. read more...

Hotel Rwanda (2004)

But Schindler's List was an artistic rendering of a tragedy, while writer/director Terry George goes for dramatic realism much closer to Roland Joffe's The Killing Fields or Oliver Stone's Salvador. He's so successful that even the little dramatic tricks used to tie together disparate events glide smoothly and unobtrusively with the journalistic flow. George depicts Rusesabagina as a charmer and a wheeler-dealer with a passive side; he can't bring himself to believe that help is not on the way. read more...
