    Salón México (1949)

The great cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa shot this terrific black-and-white Mexican film noir, capturing a kind of hopeless nocturnal existence, crossed with its very opposite, hopeful daylight existence. As the story progresses, the two begin to bleed into each other's spaces. A woman, Mercedes (Marga López), dances in a nightclub, desperately trying to raise money to put her younger sister Beatriz (Silvia Derbez) through a prestigious boarding school. A sleazy nightfly catches on to what she's doing, but a kindly security guard takes a shine to her. Meanwhile, at the school, Beatriz falls in love with the director's handsome war hero son. Director Emilio Fernández (Maria Candelaria, La Perla) tells his soapy story with true dedication to the characters and the places they inhabit; it's filled with respect and real feeling. Figueroa shot several films for Fernández, but also famously worked with Luis Bunuel, John Ford, and John Huston; Fernández, on the other hand, is probably best known today for playing the role of Mapache in The Wild Bunch. read more...

      Remember (2016)

Canadian director Atom Egoyan offers his best work in ages with this quietly observant drama. Paying special attention to sounds, places, and tones, the movie turns unexpectedly moving and powerful. Remember recalls Egoyan's best films, Exotica, Felicia's Journey, and the Oscar-nominated The Sweet Hereafter; like those, it's an exploration of unsettling things simmering under the surface. A lesser director could have played this like a cheap thriller, with more suspense, but Egoyan explores the deeper meanings of things. read more...

        Frank (2014)

Lenny Abrahamson's Frank starts off with a strong idea, the image of the man in the fake head. This basic, but powerful image toys with several great themes, including the nature of identity, the nature of physical appearance, or even themes of art versus commerce. But though Frank touches the surface of these ideas, and it's certainly entertaining enough, it seems more content to squeeze into the framework of a familiar kind of quirky, art-house comedy-drama than to dig much deeper. read more...

          What Happened, Miss Simone? (2015)

It's interesting to note that, among all the controversy over all the white nominees of the 2016 Oscars, here's a film -- nominated for Best Documentary -- about an African-American singer, and a politically active one at that. In What Happened, Miss Simone?, director Liz Garbus tells the story of Nina Simone, interpreting her as a troubled genius. She started her career at age 4 studying classical piano. But while playing in nightclubs to try to pay the rent, she was told she needed to sing, and out came that unforgettable voice. The movie details her rise to fame with hits like "I Loves You Porgy" and her marriage to former cop Andrew Stroud (good manager, bad husband). She began performing political songs ("Mississippi Goddam") during the Civil Rights Era, unable to conceal her rage and pain. Later, she was treated for what might have been bipolar disorder. Garbus interviews Simon's daughter, niece, and surviving bandmates, and includes tons of great footage of Simone in concert, attempting to explain her particular brand of musical genius, and largely succeeding. The title comes from Maya Angelou, a question that is never answered. read more...

          Served Like a Girl (2017)

Despite a lack of polish, Lysa Heslov's documentary fully celebrates the courage of its chosen women, focusing more off the battlefield than on, and the result is a strong, teary, heartfelt group hug. read more...
