Ikiru (1952)

In the 1940s, America did not see Japanese films, for the very good reason that Japan was our enemy during WWII. But a few years later, in the early 1950s, an influx of masterworks began to trickle in, including Kenji Mizoguchi's Ugetsu, Yasujiro Ozu's Tokyo Story, and Kurosawa's Rashomon and Seven Samurai. Kurosawa was considered the most "Western" of these filmmakers, and his two films struck a nerve with Americans. The samurai must have seemed like cowboys, but in a new and exotic setting, not to mention the gorgeous and fluid visuals of those films, which brought action to a new level of art. read more...

Down in the Delta (1998)

It's hard to imagine poet/actress/author Maya Angelou, on top of all her many other achievements, saying, "you know, what I really want to do is direct." Yet direct she does, and makes a fine job of it with Down in the Delta, starring Alfre Woodard and Wesley Snipes. At first glance, Down in the Delta may seem like a TV-disease-of-the-week movie and I was not thrilled about having to see it. But, sitting there in the dark, I became tremendously moved by the movie, and I have not forgotten its power. read more...

Reign Over Me (2007)

Back in the 1940s and 50s there existed a genre called the "family melodrama" or the "women's weepie." Practitioners like Douglas Sirk and Vincente Minnelli found ways to express complex emotions that couldn't be openly discussed and did so through deceptively commonplace visual means, shadows and light, furniture arrangement, and dramatic angles. Nowadays, everything can be discussed and usually is discussed. Filmmakers like Mike Binder (The Upside of Anger) must compensate by writing intelligent screenplays, with fully fleshed-out characters, which oddly enough makes things both simpler and more complicated. read more...

Imitation of Life (1959)

Douglas Sirk's best-known movie was a huge hit in its day, but was probably not considered the masterpiece it is today. On the surface it's a very effective weepie, telling the story of two single mothers and their troubled, troublesome daughters. Lana Turner plays Lora Meredith, an actress with big dreams of Broadway stardom. She claims to have morals, but she also lies to get work. One day at the beach, she loses her daughter Susie. An unemployed black maid, Annie Johnson (Juanita Moore), finds her. Annie has a light-skinned daughter, Sarah Jane, and Lora assumes that Annie is merely her nanny, rather than her mother. Annie offers her services for next to nothing, and Lora eventually agrees. read more...
