Chaplin's Mutual Comedies 1916-1917 (2014)

Many of the world's greatest film writers, and many of the world's great writers, period, have expounded upon the genius of Charles Chaplin, (he was recently chosen as the greatest filmmaker of all time by yours truly), while others have written negatively of this supreme showman, this supreme poet of the cinema. But it occurs to me that, for a long time, it was not possible to see Chaplin's films in the proper way. Many of them had fallen into public domain, or were shown on 16mm prints at the wrong speed, or transferred to gloomy-looking VHS tapes in the early days of home video. It could be entirely possible that a number of Chaplin's detractors have seen these substandard examples of his work -- with the grace and timing lost -- and made their judgment call. read more...

The Freshman (1925)

Considered one of Harold Lloyd's masterpieces, after Safety Last and The Kid Brother, The Freshman (1925) sends Harold off to college, where he tries to win the heart of Peggy (Jobyna Ralston). He thinks he's become popular by emulating his favorite movie character, but instead he's the school "boob." (He does a silly little dance any time he meets someone.) Highlights include the party scene in which Harold wears a not-quite-completed suit and the exciting, climactic football game. In 1990, it was selected for the Library of Congress's National Film Registry, and it holds up extremely well today. read more...

Speedy (1928)

The summery Speedy (1928) was Harold Lloyd's final silent film, though it's perhaps more notable for an onscreen appearance of baseball legend Babe Ruth. Lloyd plays the title character, a baseball-obsessed ne'er-do-well who can't seem to hang onto a job -- as the movie begins, he's a soda jerk -- though his girl, Jane (Ann Christy) loves him anyway. ("Speedy" was his nickname in real life as well.) The plot has him trying to save Jane's grandfather's horse-drawn trolley car, though there are long, carefree segments not connected to anything, such as a crazy day at Coney Island; the movie has a terrific, on-location feel for New York City. Director Ted Wilde received an Oscar nomination for Best Comedy Director, a category that, sadly, didn't last long. (Lloyd was always in charge of his movies, but never took a directing credit for himself.) read more...

Three Ages (1923)

Buster Keaton's feature debut Three Ages (1923) was filmed in three segments just in case it flopped, it could be cut into three short films and re-released. Ostensibly a spoof of Griffith's Intolerance, Keaton's film looks at love triangles throughout the ages, specifically the Caveman era, ancient Rome, and the modern era. It's not one of his most inspired efforts overall, but it contains many memorable moments, such as Buster's entrance on a dinosaur, or the gorgeous moment in which he tumbles over a cliff and gives the camera a kiss as he goes. read more...
