Undead (2003)

Though filmmakers never seem to run out of ideas for vampire movies, the new crop of zombie movies faintly smacks of desperation. Filmmakers have recently tried for faster zombies, updated backdrops and comedy angles, but no one has yet been able to touch the master, George A. Romero's brilliant quadrilogy (though Shaun of the Dead comes close). Peter and Michael Spierig's new Australian zombie movie, Undead, arrives on U.S. shores two years after its Australia opening and just a couple of weeks after Romero's latest masterpiece, Land of the Dead. Despite a few new ideas and a modicum of entertainment value, Undead ultimately seems irrelevant. read more...

Candyman (1992)

English filmmaker Bernard Rose would go on to make movies about Beethoven and movies based on works by Tolstoy, but for a fleeting moment, he was a horror guy. His Candyman (1992) was based on a story by Clive Barker and featured several high-class touches, such as a creepy score by Philip Glass, and striking art direction, clashing the academic world with graffiti-ridden inner city projects. Two college students (Virginia Madsen and future film director Kasi Lemmons) research a paper on urban legends. One such legend, the Candyman, appears if you say his name five times in a mirror, which, of course, happens. Tony Todd plays the weirdly elegant, but quite deadly, monster. read more...

Train to Busan (2016)

Often it's the simplest ideas that are the most ingenious. Get this one: zombies... on a train. That's it. Ingenious. And, amazingly, the South Korean film Train to Busan gets just about everything right with this scenario. It begins with a busy businessman (Gong Yoo), who reluctantly takes time from work to take his daughter (Kim Su-an) to see her mother on her birthday. read more...

Halloween (2018)

Director David Gordon Green has one of the most fascinating and uneven careers in film right now, coming off one of the best debuts of the last two decades, George Washington, wandering in nearly every direction, occasionally failing spectacularly, but always worth watching. Up to now, he has never made a horror film, and not much in his existing filmography would indicate an interest in it. Often, when established filmmakers turn to horror, they tend to dress it up a bit, so as not to appear to be sinking into such a low, disreputable genre. (Luca Guadagnino did this with his Suspiria remake.) But Green dives right into the new Halloween with an enthusiastic and exciting fervor; it's the best film since the original in this long running series. read more...

The Ruins (2008)

The new horror film The Ruins is not a remake or even a copy of any horror film of recent years. We're talking first-class material, adapted from a novel by Scott B. Smith, who was nominated for an Oscar for his screenplay for A Simple Plan (1998), adapted from his own 1993 book. (See my interview.) The Ruins is a terrific airplane novel, surprising and gripping, and Dreamworks could have made an outstanding film of it. But they threw it away. read more...
