Delivery Man (2013)

Canadian Ken Scott directs the American remake of his own R-rated French-language film Starbuck, which opened in this country just a few months back. Delivery Man has been awarded a PG-13 rating, indicating that it has been at least a little neutered. Vince Vaughn stars as David Wozniak, who, in the early 1990s, donated sperm over 600 times, resulting in 533 children, 142 of whom have initiated a lawsuit to find the identity of their biological dad. read more...

We're the Millers (2013)

Hollywood is always looking for the magic formula, and it seems as if the one right now is movies about bad behavior that ultimately turns into good behavior. In other words, the bad behavior isn't really bad... it's in a controlled environment. read more...

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016)

I caught up with this pop music mockumentary late, and as much as I longed to see the world of boy bands and inane pop music skewered, I found it to be largely unfunny and altogether a bit too predictable. To start, the main character Conner (Andy Samberg) is that deadly combination of arrogant and inept, which is very hard to pull off and usually ends up annoying me. He is a former member of the Style Boyz, a group made up of his old childhood pals. Having split up, he went solo with a phenomenal debut album. His new record, however, is a flop, and now he must try to figure out where he went wrong. (Hint: he may have to consider getting back together with his old band... surprise!) Normally funny actors like Sarah Silverman, Joan Cusack, and Bill Hader are not funny here. The movie is mostly cameos and very broad humor, with very little actual satire, and all of it forced into a typical feel-good message. I couldn't help wondering why folks like Nas, RZA, Snoop Dogg, and Ringo Starr agreed to appear in this, unless they didn't read the script. read more...

The Boss (2016)

Melissa McCarthy is a comedy force to be reckoned with, and, one feels, someone perfect for our times. Yet it seems a little difficult to consistently focus her comedy chops throughout an entire feature film. Her work with Paul Feig is terrific — when she's at her best, she's empowered — but otherwise, she seems to fall prey to the wrong kind of lowbrow. The Boss is co-written and directed by her husband Ben Falcone. I did not see their previous collaboration, Tammy (2014), but judging by its general reception, and judging by The Boss, I'd guess that a spousal relationship and a working relationship are two different things. read more...

Central Intelligence (2016)

Diminutive Kevin Hart seems to work best in movies when paired with a polar opposite, like the sneering street thug Ice Cube, or the very large but childlike Will Ferrell. In the mildly entertaining Central Intelligence, he's paired with brawny former pro wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. It works, but the hitch this time is that Johnson has stretched a little further than usual with his comic chops and has created a hilarious character. read more...
