Let Me In (2010)

Released the same weekend as Twilight, Tomas Alfredson's Swedish import Let the Right One In (2008) -- based on John Ajvide Lindqvist's novel -- never became a cash cow, but it did one better: it earned the adoration of both horror fanboys and mainstream critics, and both groups proclaimed it among the greatest vampire movies ever made. Before anyone could say "sacrilegious," Hollywood pumped out this close remake, set in 1983 New Mexico, with Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) directing, but employing a similarly chilly, patient mood. Truthfully, if Let Me In were an original, it would be fairly terrific. But it lives in the shadow of its predecessor, and the inevitable comparisons are not favorable. read more...

The Fly (1986)

Director David Cronenberg has always been fascinated with the changing of the human body in all its forms -- mutation, drug addiction, etc. -- and the horror and revulsion that naturally results. In other words, he is able to exploit natural fears through supernatural means. The re-working of the 1958 horror classic The Fly gave him fertile ground to explore this theme. read more...

Life After Beth (2014)

The directorial debut of Jeff Baena, who co-wrote the brilliant, polarizing I Heart Huckabees (2004), Life After Beth is a terrific modern-day take on the classic "Monkey's Paw" story. It depends a great deal on its sly, sustained deadpan humor and weird comic detours. Some viewers may tire of repeated jokes like the fact that smooth jazz music tends to calm the zombies, or the full-sized oven strapped to a zombie's back during a long sequence. But these jokes are actually timed to escalate in funniness, rather than diminish. read more...

The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967)

With the world's love for big, expensive musicals still unwavering, it's a wonder why Jacques Demy's The Young Girls of Rochefort (1965) is still such an unknown curiosity. A follow-up to his smaller, sadder The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, it's a weird mix of reality and fantasy, American and French. Real-life sisters Catherine Deneuve and Francoise Dorleac (who sadly died just two years later at the age of 25) co-star as movie sisters, running a little snack bar and dreaming of falling in love and being swept away to Paris. Several men show up, and everyone falls in love all at the wrong time, causing much running around, dancing, and singing. read more...

Inferno (1980)

Dario Argento's Inferno was the second of his "three mothers" trilogy that began with Suspiria (1977) and would not be finished until twenty-seven years later with Mother of Tears (2007). As with many of Argento's other films, it's easy to lose the plot thread, and the characters are not exactly worthy of Dickens, but the imagery and its impact on the senses is so incredibly powerful that it elevates Argento to the level of a master. read more...
