Though most of the world got to see Beau Travail last year, it has just reared its head here in the Bay Area. And it was worth waiting for. This adaptation of Herman Melville's Billy Budd by filmmaker Claire Denis is nothing short of a masterpiece. read more...

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)

I was hoping for a chance to see The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford a second time before I wrote my review, but only to confirm my suspicions that it's a surprising near-masterpiece, certainly one of the year's best films, and the best Western to come across the range since Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven (1992) and Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man (1996). I had been looking forward to the film, mainly because 2007 had previously yielded two very good Westerns in Seraphim Falls and 3:10 to Yuma. I had also admired New Zealand director Andrew Dominik's previous and only other feature, Chopper (2000). But none of this prepared me for the scope, artistry and brilliance of this new film. read more...

I Can't Sleep (1994)

Set in and around a Paris hotel, I Can't Sleep focuses on several of the building's inhabitants as they go about their daily lives, contemplating work, relationships and new places to live. Claire Denis, the director of the masterworks Beau Travail (1999) and Friday Night (2003), is so good at quietly capturing small, slow rhythms and fuzzy, dreamy moments that I Can't Sleep already succeeds all on its own. read more...

    Joan the Maid (1994)

This two-part film on two DVDs is the first movie from the great Jacques Rivette to make it to the new format, while most of his films are still not available on video at all. Rivette, of course, was one of the original Cahiers du Cinema writers-turned-filmmakers, keeping company with Jean-Luc Godard and Francois Truffaut. He is among the most patient and thoughtful of filmmakers, forgoing any concern for length in favor of depth. read more...

    La Notte (1961)

La Notte is the center piece of a trilogy by Michelangelo Antonioni; it comes between L'Avventura (1960) and L'Eclisse (1962), and it's the heaviest of the three. As the great critic David Thomson has pointed out, the other two films are about the beginnings of romance, or perhaps even casual flings. La Notte is about a marriage. It's serious. read more...
