    Together (2001)

"Franco is dead!" a radio announces in a Swedish hippie commune in 1975, kicking off the new film Together. And the hippies jump and cheer, even the children. Meanwhile, Che Guevara and Mao Zedong posters decorate the house. It's a surreal experience that slaps us in the face and lets us know that we're in a different world and a different time. read more...

White Bird in a Blizzard (2014)

The only other Gregg Araki movie I've seen to date is Mysterious Skin (2005), which I considered to be one of the best movies of its year. Watching White Bird in a Blizzard, I can see certain similarities in his approach to life in the suburbs, and the way that young people grow up there. It's not an entirely optimistic view; nothing is easy or clean, and happy endings are not common. But kids can get tough and have a way of surviving. The difference between what made Mysterious Skin great and what makes White Bird in a Blizzard merely good is that the new film takes time out to surprise us with a mystery story. Mystery stories are fine, but this mystery is far less interesting than the characters themselves. read more...

        Shirkers (2018)

Sandi Tan's bittersweet Shirkers is a most extraordinary movie-story, telling the story of three friends in Singapore, Sandi, Jasmine, and Sophie, who decide to make a movie when they're barely out of their teens. They receive "help," from a film teacher called Georges, and the film is completed, but then Georges disappears with all the film and materials, leaving the three young women to contend with their strange loss. Tan's writing and directing is wonderfully assured — she worked as a film critic and published a novel in the years since — and the footage from the unfinished "Shirkers" is boldly colorful and frequently striking. She manages to dig a little under the surface of friendships here, exposing flaws as well as virtues. This is a totally captivating, and surprisingly moving film. read more...

          Tully (2018)

I was lucky enough to see Jason Reitman's Tully at the San Francisco Film Festival, because it has given me enough time to truly ponder its depths. I now think it's the best film Reitman has made in a career of slightly overpraised good films (Juno, Up in the Air, Young Adult) some flat-out bad ones (Labor Day; Men, Women & Children), and an unsung gem (Thank You for Smoking). It comes from a screenplay by the Oscar-winner Diablo Cody, who wrote Juno and Young Adult; it's her third time working with Reitman and her second time working with star Charlize Theron, who starred in Young Adult. I'll stop referencing earlier movies now, because Tully leaves them all behind. read more...

            Support the Girls (2018)

Following up his fine, but rather ordinary big budget (or bigger-budget) debut Results, the great indie filmmaker Andrew Bujalski — who is arguably the best of what was once labeled the "mumblecore" movement (Funny Ha Ha, Mutual Appreciation, etc.) — returns to something with a lower-budget feel. It also feels like a much better fit. Support the Girls takes place over the course of one frenzied day, but Bujalski's movie doesn't have a frenzied feel. When Lisa (Regina Hall), the general manager of a restaurant called "Double Whammies" tries to juggle all the challenges of her day, it's not all slapstick and manic energy. She handles some problems, struggles with others, gets frustrated, and occasionally takes time to sneak out behind the restaurant for a smoke or a cry. read more...
