Citizenfour (2014)

Sometimes a documentary goes beyond all critical appraisal and simply needs to be seen by every American. Although I understand that a theatrical release gives it more credibility, frankly it ought to be shown free, online. Perhaps in a few months, it will. read more...

Merchants of Doubt (2015)

Directed by Robert Kenner, of the excellent documentary Food, Inc. (2009), Merchants of Doubt feels a little scattershot, as if it were unsure exactly whether to stay on the topic of misdirection or to dive directly into the immediate and pressing issue of climate change. When it is on topic, it's quite educational, illustrating just how people are hired for the purpose of misrepresenting data (or presenting false data) and how they cast doubt. read more...

The Look of Silence (2015)

Joshua Oppenheimer's follow-up, or companion piece, to his extraordinary The Act of Killing, The Look of Silence feels slightly smaller-scale, which is not necessarily a bad thing in this case. It follows an Indonesian man, an optician, who interviews various individuals who were purportedly involved with the killings of so-called communists in the 1960s. The man's brother was killed during that time, and he proves to be an assertive, canny interviewer; one subject angrily says that he's even pushier than "Josh." Oppenheimer includes several asides, visits with the interviewer's century-old parents, and other striking images that allow time for the atrocities, and the human memory, to sink in. The Act of Killing was nominated for an Oscar, but did not win, and this one could make up for it. read more...

Deliver Us from Evil (2006)

Amy Berg's Oscar-nominated documentary tells the story of Catholic priest Father Oliver O'Grady, who, each time he was caught molesting children, was moved by the Church to some other small town. This grim territory was already well covered in films like Kirby Dick's Twist of Faith (2004). But where Deliver Us from Evil succeeds is in its canny psychological profile of the Catholic Church, and how its history feeds into its current psychosis. It's shocking and revealing to hear how the current problem and all its emotional suffering is the result of sheer greed. By getting to the root of the problem, Berg moves beyond a mere exposé and into something more profoundly useful. read more...

I Am Not Your Negro (2016)

In a year of remarkable documentaries on racism — coming, apparently, just in time — Raoul Peck's I Am Not Your Negro isn't as sensational or essential as O.J.: Made in America, nor as far-reaching and emotional as Ava Duvernay's 13th, but it's certainly the most scholarly. (The trio should be taken together as an important snapshot of racism as an inextricable part of American history.) Director Peck (Lumumba) bases his film on an unfinished manuscript by author James Baldwin (1924-1987), detailing Baldwin's reminiscences of and friendships with civil rights leaders Medgar Evers, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X. Samuel L. Jackson narrates from the manuscript, using a surprisingly effective, moderated voice, and matching Baldwin's own beautiful, intelligent manner of speaking. This flows over a stream of powerful images, archival footage of Baldwin speaking about race with clarity that was unheard of at the time, difficult for whites to understand (perhaps less so now, but still difficult). A short capsule review cannot do this documentary's depth of intelligence justice, but suffice to say that it uses history and literature to peel back old wounds and reveal fresh ones. read more...
