In the Mouth of Madness (1995)

Horror films are no longer what they used to be, but John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness is a real, honest-to-goodness horror film, not a gore film or a goofy comedy. (It has a little gore, but the true emphasis is on being scared.) I watched In the Mouth of Madness late at night, with the lights off and alone, and it was kinda scary and I had a great time. read more...

Wild at Heart (1990)

Adapted from Barry Gifford's novel, Wild at Heart mixes a little The Wizard of Oz with a dash of Elvis and becomes David Lynch's least engaging film. Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern star as Sailor and Lula, a delinquent couple dripping with chemistry. These beautiful star-crossed lovers hit the highway after Lula's mother (Diane Ladd) puts out a contract on Sailor's life. Willem Dafoe co-stars and is at his most menacingly psychotic as Bobby Peru, a reptilian fiend who tricks Sailor into joining him on an ill-fated robbery. Isabella Rossellini, Harry Dean Stanton, Crispin Glover, Jack Nance, Sherilyn Fenn, Sheryl Lee and others appear in supporting roles or cameos. read more...

The Nun (2018)

Sadly, this horror movie, an attempt at a fifth chapter in the Conjuring universe, is, despite a temptingly promising locale, nowhere near as scary, as inspired, or as coherent as its predecessors. read more...

    Session 9 (2001)

A few years ago, two Andersons (no relation to me) made extraordinary splashes on the movie scene with Bottle Rocket and Rushmore (Wes Anderson) and Hard Eight and Boogie Nights (Paul Thomas Anderson). Around the same time, another Anderson (still no relation to me) made a much smaller splash, but the ripples from that splash have continued to spread ever outward. read more...

    Djinn (2013)

Tobe Hooper's unjustly panned final film Djinn (2013) is set in the United Arab Emirates and deals with the evil creature of lore. In a prologue, an arrogant American goes to see a high-rise apartment building and learns (the hard way) about the creature. Then, a couple living in the United States returns home and moves into the building, which, as soon as they arrive, is surrounded by a creepy fog. The neighbors don't seem quite right, and while the husband travels back and forth to town for work, the wife is left alone to deal with the weirdness and a possible invader. Hooper is at the top of his game here with his sense of space and mood, and the movie is briskly timed and paced, though the digital FX appear a little on the cheap side. I would imagine that the "foreignness" of it likely turned off many viewers, which might explain its chilly-to-hostile reception. Never mind. Casual horror fans may not care, but for Hooper fans it's a must. read more...
