    Aftermath (2017)

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Scoot McNairy give powerful performances in this dire, downbeat drama, but the filmmaking frequently undermines them, choosing shortcuts over deeper, more soulful exploration. read more...

    Invincible (2001)

I should preface this review by saying that I am a big Werner Herzog fan. I believe that he may be one of our greatest living film directors, with a fierce and fearless personal vision and a reckless, foolhardy filmmaking technique. His Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) and Lessons of Darkness (1992) at the very least rank among the greatest films ever made. Hence, I was very excited to be invited last year to an advance screening of Herzog's new film (well, almost new... he's made three since then), called Invincible. And I have to admit I was perplexed to watch it unfold with an astonishing lack of passion or uniqueness. If I wasn't absolutely sure I was watching a Herzog film, I would have guessed that Invincible was made by some obscure refugee from the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar category. read more...

    Ben Is Back (2018)

Between this and Beautiful Boy — another harrowing drama about a young person's addiction to drugs — I think I dislike Ben Is Back slightly less. Both movies are a brow-furrowing mishmash of anguish and rage, with moments of rising, bitter courage thrown in, and both movies are about the nature of the disease itself, rather than about the characters. Both movies attempt moments of quiet and calm in-between the misery, but Beautiful Boy's moments are thick with foreboding, and it's impossible to relax. But Peter Hedges, the writer and director of Ben Is Back, is more successful at these moments, perhaps because his film is set at Christmastime. There are a few minutes here and there wherein one might even forget what a miserable time one is having. Hedges's son Lucas plays, and suffers greatly, as the addict, and Julia Roberts runs on high octane as his mom, taking a noble stand in her son's life. read more...

      In the Fade (2018)

German director Fatih Akin has made some very interesting movies over the past couple of decades, including fluid, lively titles like In July (2000), Head-On (2004), The Edge of Heaven (2007), and Soul Kitchen (2009). Now he's poised for his first real awards-season glory with In the Fade, which recently won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and is easily the most uninteresting of his films that I've seen. Whether it was simply blessed with good (or bad) timing, or whether it's trying to capitalize on the current (abominable) uprising of white supremacists, the movie tilts too far into heaviness and messages, and it goes on far too long. read more...

The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018)

With an earthy, realistic tone, this timely drama about gay-conversion therapy is fairly straightforward; it's geared toward a YA audience, but it's patient and warmly sympathetic enough for others. read more...
