    Ginger & Fred (1986)

Federico Fellini's career can almost be traced across a line chart. When he began, he partially kept to his Neo-Realism roots (Variety Lights, The White Sheik, etc.). Soon after, he abandoned them for less realistic, more dreamlike films like La Dolce Vita (1960) and 8 1/2 (1963) before dissolving completely into phantasmagoric excess (Juliet of the Spirits, Satyricon). But at some point after that, as he approached retirement age, he merged into a more wistful approach, half-nostalgic and half-fantastical. These later films don't enjoy the reputation of Fellini's earlier works, but then again, few films made by senior citizens do. read more...

      City That Never Sleeps (1953)

Decades ago, Martin Scorsese drew up a list of his 100 "guilty pleasures," which was published in Film Comment magazine. On this list was John H. Auer's City That Never Sleeps (1953). But unlike any of the other items on this list, this movie came with a footnote: "or any Auer film." That intrigued me. But information on Auer was hard to come by. He's not listed in Andrew Sarris's The American Cinema, nor David Thomson's Biographical Dictionary of Film. What I could dig up said that he was born in Hungary and was a child actor there. He came to Hollywood at some point and directed mostly "B" movies. City That Never Sleeps seems to be the one people consider his masterpiece. read more...

        Rosewater (2014)

Jon Stewart, of "The Daily Show," makes his directing debut with Rosewater, a movie about an imprisoned journalist (Gael Garcia Bernal) in Iran. But despite Stewart's comedy background, the movie gives over maybe 2% of its running time to mild chuckles. The rest is serious. What could have been an effective grilling of politics is now an "issue" movie. read more...

          Never Look Away (2019)

Here's an example of what is wrong with the Best Foreign Language Film category of the Academy Awards. The Academy does not simply choose from the best foreign language films released in a year. Each country submits one (and only one) film to a committee that narrows it down to the final five. Of course, each country is going to submit something that they think will win, something noble and upright and proper, something that represents the country in a positive light... in other words, boring. Many countries have their favorite go-to filmmakers that grind out these things. Germany's is Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, and he won with The Lives of Others, a film that somehow beat Guillermo Del Toro's masterpiece Pan's Labyrinth. read more...

            Tully (2018)

I was lucky enough to see Jason Reitman's Tully at the San Francisco Film Festival, because it has given me enough time to truly ponder its depths. I now think it's the best film Reitman has made in a career of slightly overpraised good films (Juno, Up in the Air, Young Adult) some flat-out bad ones (Labor Day; Men, Women & Children), and an unsung gem (Thank You for Smoking). It comes from a screenplay by the Oscar-winner Diablo Cody, who wrote Juno and Young Adult; it's her third time working with Reitman and her second time working with star Charlize Theron, who starred in Young Adult. I'll stop referencing earlier movies now, because Tully leaves them all behind. read more...
