The Expendables 3 (2014)

The main trouble with The Expendables 3 is that, unlike his Rocky or Rambo franchises, writer/actor and sometime director Sylvester Stallone really doesn't seem to know what it's for. Other than a nostalgic collection of familiar faces, he doesn't appear to have any opinions, ideas, or commentary on the action genre one way or another, and the remaining theme of "teamwork" is stretched thinner and thinner as more cast members come on board. read more...

Transporter 3 (2008)

Most film trilogies usually drop the ball on the third entry, but if you want to see it done right, check out the fun, unpretentious Transporter 3. Our driver Frank Martin (Jason Statham) returns. He refuses the job of transporting a kidnapped girl from Marseilles to the Black Sea, but unfortunately the villains have other ideas. He wakes up and finds an insidious device strapped to his wrist: if he moves within 100 feet of his car, he blows up. (Shades of Crank!) read more...

Taken 3 (2014)

In Taken 3, Liam Neeson appears to have grown comfortable with the Bryan Mills character, wearing him like a broken-in old pair of shoes, but only when he's relating to other humans. When the action scenes kick in, as they do at an increasing rate, the movie becomes sludge. The movements, angles, and editing turn everything into a jumble, and poor Neeson can't do much of anything with these scenes. read more...

Machete Kills (2013)

As with the El Mariachi and the Spy Kids movies, a Robert Rodriguez sequel has once again fallen short of its predecessor. Machete was arguably Rodriguez's best movie, and now Machete Kills, while still passable, comes nowhere close. It doesn't really push the envelope; instead of taking gleeful joy in breaking the rules, this one only bends the rules, and doesn't seem too excited about it. read more...

The Transporter (2002)

An entertaining surprise, Corey Yuen's The Transporter doesn't have any large issues at stake: just fast, clean fun. Jason Statham, with his growling British-twinged whisper, stars as a freelance secret agent available to transport people or objects from one place to another. This time, it's both: his package starts to move, and it turns out to be the sexy Shu Qi (Millennium Mambo, So Close). All kinds of trouble follows. read more...
