Up (2009)

Pixar's tenth animated feature film clocks in as one of their best. It's a fairly light, simple entertainment, without the sheer genius of the first hour of WALL-E, but it's also more balanced and satisfying than that film. In terms of its use of space and setting, it's a grand, graceful achievement, capturing a genuine feeling of height, gravity, and movement through empty sky. read more...

Brave (2012)

Some critics have been giving Brave fairly tepid notices, perhaps tapping into the so-called "production troubles" that have circulated through the rumor mill, or perhaps unfairly comparing it to other Pixar titles. But whatever the reason, these folks have cheated themselves out of an excellent movie, and one that I'd rank among the top half of Pixar's output thus far. (And a massive improvement over the last one, Cars 2.) read more...

The Little Prince (2016)

Given that it's based on one of the most popular books of all time (Antoine de Saint-Exupery's 1943 novella), fans may rule that Mark Osborne's movie version of The Little Prince (2016) is somewhere between an insult and a disaster. But taken on its own, it's a wonderfully creative, soul-soothing work. After screening at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, it was successfully released overseas, but a U.S. release somehow never happened. Now Netflix has picked up the ball, and it can be seen at last (at least in its English-dubbed version). read more...

Toy Story 3 (2010)

The geniuses at Pixar haven't necessarily improved upon Toy Story 2 (1999), but more than ten years later they have effectively repeated its themes and provided a terrific and funny summer adventure. Andy (voiced by John Morris, who has provided Andy's voice in all three films) has continued to grow, and is now ready for college. His mother has ordered him to clean out his room. Everything in it either goes with him to college, into the attic, or into the trash. read more...

Finding Dory (2016)

Advancing a lovable supporting character to a lead role is sometimes a bad idea (i.e. Cars 2, Minions). But, when the supporting characters are far less annoying than the lead characters, it can be a good idea (i.e. freeing Puss in Boots from Shrek, and the Penguins of Madagascar from the rest of their zoo crew). Pixar's new Finding Dory must have been a tricky prospect, because so many people love Finding Nemo (it's one of the biggest moneymakers in the studio's history) and also because Dory could easily have fallen into a one-joke pattern (her short-term memory loss). read more...
