The Conjuring 2 (2016)

While a bit on the long side, this very scary sequel shows director James Wan at the top of his game, taking a great idea and turning it into a rare, thoughtful chiller that ponders the metaphysical. It was evident from the original The Conjuring (2013) that the real-life Warrens would make great "ghostbuster"-type characters for any number of sequels, and The Conjuring 2 has delivered on that promise. read more...

Needful Things (1993)

This not-bad Stephen King adaptation is too long, but benefits from a snappy script by W.D. Richter and a top-notch cast. Leland Gaunt (Max von Sydow) arrives in a small, New England town and opens the title shop, where customers can get whatever they need -- for a price. Ed Harris plays the sheriff who suspects that something odd is up. Fraser Clarke Heston (Charlton Heston's son) directs. Kino Lorber released a decent 2015 Blu-ray edition with an interesting commentary track by Heston and a trailer. read more...

10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)

The biggest trick that 10 Cloverfield Lane pulls off is that it casts doubt on whether it's actually a sequel to Cloverfield (2008), that low-budget, found-footage monster movie that was a surprise hit — and surprisingly good. read more...

The Darkness (2016)

Oddly, this well-cast horror movie (not to be confused with the 2004 horror movie Darkness) is more interesting for its family drama than for its scares. It might almost be worth seeing, if not for the nonsensical story, jump-scares, and other lazy stuff. Kevin Bacon and Radha Mitchell lead an able cast, filling out likably human characters, flawed but not stupid, and trying hard to fix things. The family's confrontations, over drinking, infidelity, bulimia, and autism, are much more engaging than the strangely flat ghost story. read more...
