The Interview (2014)

Co-writers and co-directors Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen follow up their acclaimed all-star hit This Is the End with The Interview, a less metaphysical and more topical comedy. It's an attempt at a political satire, stirring up trouble before its release -- or at least tangentially involved in trouble -- but resulting in less a political satire than a bromance with jokes about body parts and bodily functions. read more...

Looney Tunes: Musical Masterpieces (2015)

Growing up and heading out into the world, I realized that I had learned some of the world's great pieces of music from the Looney Tunes cartoons. (There was a reason they were called "Tunes.") Indeed, even when they featured original music (by the incomparable Carl Stalling), these cartoons were at their most creative when they focused on music as a theme or subject (many of these shorts, aside from singing, relied on pure visuals to tell their stories). So this collection of 18 music-related cartoons was a brilliant idea, and it showcases some of the finest work the Warner team ever did. read more...

Pixels (2015)

Lightly improving upon Adam Sandler's recent lazy, slapdash comedies Jack and Jill, Blended, and Grown-Ups and its sequel, Chris Columbus's new Pixels is a good-looking, professional polished summer popcorn movie. read more...

Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery (2014)

Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery is apparently the twenty-first of the direct-to-video, feature-length, animated Scooby-Doo movies, but it's the first one I've actually seen all the way through. My son is a Scooby fan, but he never took to the longer stories until now. (I think it was a combination of length and scariness factor.) In any case, I was impressed at how well these beloved old characters translate to the longer running time, and we both enjoyed ourselves. read more...

I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1988)

Keenen Ivory Wayans' blaxploitation spoof I'm Gonna Git You Sucka! (1988) came at a weird time: most young viewers had never seen or even heard of blaxploitation movies and it was about six years before Quentin Tarantino would bring them back. Wayans' film wanders back and forth between deadpan Airplane-style humor and overt slapstick. Wayans plays a soldier who returns home to avenge his brother's death by going after the gangsters who supplied him with too many gold chains. I remember this film being hysterical at the time, but it hasn't aged well. Wayans' doesn't have much in the way of visual style or rhythmic timing, and his performance in the lead role is the weakest in the film. It does benefit from appearances by the aforementioned Fargas, a young Chris Rock, Isaac Hayes, Jim Brown and KRS-One with his group Boogie Down Productions. read more...
