I, Daniel Blake (2016)

I, Daniel Blake was director Ken Loach's second Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or winner, after The Wind That Shakes the Barley. It's another example of his brand of keenly-observed social realism, with moments that are genuinely touching mixed with moments of righteous indignation. Loach's frequent screenwriter, Paul Laverty, is back, and while he has a tendency to fall back on simplistic, melodramatic moments, Loach is mostly capable of smoothing them out; this turns out to be one of their best collaborations. read more...

The Stanford Prison Experiment (2015)

A movie about the real-life 1971 Stanford prison experiment could have been sadistic and unwatchable, director Kyle Patrick Alvarez's clinical approach focuses on realism and psychological drama rather than on thrills. Alvarez doesn't try to professionally polish the prison setting; instead it has a functional, homemade look that makes it feel more immediate. The way the characters wear their hair and clothes, and they way they carry themselves contributes to what feels like an authentic period piece. read more...

L'Enfant (2005)

The winner of the 2005 Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne's latest is a realistic portrayal of a trio of brutal lives. We meet young, blond Sonia (Déborah François), freshly out of the hospital with her newborn child. She spends a bit of time seeking her boyfriend, Bruno (Jérémie Renier), and spots him begging for money in the streets. They check into a shelter for the night, but Bruno leaves to take care of business, fencing a few items stolen by his adolescent partner, Steve (Jérémie Segard). Not long after, Bruno is charged with taking the baby for a walk, and he decides to sell it. When Sonia (understandably) throws a fit, he tries to get the baby back. read more...
