Chaplin (1992)

On a certain level, Richard Attenborough's Chaplin isn't a very good film. Chaplin's life is so long and complex and with so many facets that hardly any movie could really do it justice (certainly not one that runs only 144 minutes). Plus, Attenborough was probably not the man for the job; he had won an Oscar for making Gandhi, but he's a journeyman director without even the tiniest sliver of the artistry made Chaplin great. (Imagine what Wes Anderson, the Coen brothers, Pedro Almodovar, or Spike Jonze could have done.) And seen today, Chaplin wallows in all the biopic clichés that have become so numerous and annoying. read more...

Ben-Hur (1959)

In William Wyler's Ben-Hur, Charlton Heston plays Jewish prince Judah Ben-Hur. His former childhood friend Messala (Stephen Boyd) now works for the evil Roman emperor. When Judah refuses to help Messala with some underhanded deeds, Messala betrays him and has him thrown in prison. He escapes and spends the rest of the film looking for his mother and sister and plotting his revenge against Messala. Occasionally he crosses paths with Jesus Christ (played by an uncredited actor). read more...

Get on Up (2014)

The biopic about James Brown was only inevitable, I suppose, though it's a good thing that Chadwick Boseman landed the role of the Godfather of Soul in Get on Up. He's magnificent, and effortlessly conveys an awesome performance energy throughout the movie. (Boseman also played Jackie Robinson in last year's underrated 42.) Like nearly any major Hollywood biopic it's this centerpiece performance that drives the movie. read more...

    The Cotton Club (1984)

By the time Francis Ford Coppola's The Cotton Club was released in theaters in December of 1984 its troubled production history had already been in the news, and most critics and viewers were prepared to receive it as a bomb. Thankfully Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert gave it a real chance on their show, and they both named it one of the ten best films of the year. I saw it a few months later, several times, probably on a grubby VHS tape, and loved it too. read more...

      Philomena (2013)

The ever-reliable English filmmaker Stephen Frears teams up with comic actor Steve Coogan for this very nicely balanced and unexpectedly moving "true story." Coogan co-wrote the screenplay and stars as Martin Sixsmith, a cynical, out-of-work journalist who stumbles across an interesting story. As a teen, Philomena became pregnant and was forced to live and work at a convent. The nuns gave up her baby for adoption and have never allowed Philomena to know the child's name or location. Near the child's fiftieth birthday, Philomena (Judi Dench) has decided to speak to the press. read more...
