The Merchant of Four Seasons (1972)

In Rainer Werner Fassbinder's The Merchant of Four Seasons a former fruit peddler Hans (Hans Hirschmüller), unable to continue in his work, attempts to build a business for himself and his wife (Irm Hermann), whom he barely cares about. The soul-sucking nature of capitalism drives this brilliant film, but the rich characters and the almost constant tension keep it emotionally resonant. Filmmaker Wim Wenders provides a commentary track for this excellent new DVD. A Criterion Blu-ray followed in 2015. read more...

    Vitalina Varela (2020)

Believe it or not, dear readers, I have never seen a Pedro Costa movie before now. I am ashamed to admit it. To be sure, until the Criterion Collection released three of his movies on DVD in the U.S., Costa's movies were difficult to find, mostly staples of film festivals and rarely seeing regular release. But the same fate befell Costa's fellow countryman, Portugal's Manoel de Oliveira, and still I managed to see ten of his films over the years. So I have no excuse. However, based on the strength of Vitalina Varela, I plan to catch up with Costa's other films, especially In Vanda's Room (2000), Colossal Youth (2006), and Horse Money (2014). read more...

      Contempt (1963)

A screenwriter Paul Javal (Michel Piccoli) upsets his marriage to the beautiful blonde Camille (Brigitte Bardot) by taking on a job for an egomaniacal American film producer Jeremy Prokosch (Jack Palance). His task: adapt Homer's "The Odyssey" for director Fritz Lang (playing himself). In several instances, he passively lets Prokosch hit on his wife, and she begins to resent him for it, though they continue to play mind games and guessing games with one another over the real cause of the rift. Meanwhile, Lang has his head deeply into "The Odyssey" and discusses with Paul several possibilities as to why Ulysses might have stayed away from his wife Penelope for so many years. read more...

      Venus in Fur (2014)

Throughout his entire career, from his feature debut Knife in the Water (1962) to the recent Carnage (2011), director Roman Polanski has specialized in wringing psychological tension from just a few characters (or one character) who are stuck and coming to pieces within limited spaces. In Venus in Fur, that place happens to be in the theater, and because it's based on a play by David Ives, some viewers may find it too stagy or stagebound. However, Polanski does not use the theater setting like a stage, and Venus in Fur moves very much like a movie, and a highly skilled one. read more...

      Happiness (1998)

Writer/director Todd Solondz may be one of the most disturbed individuals out there. Thank God he's making movies instead of obscene phone calls. His 1996 critical hit Welcome to the Dollhouse was a direct channeling of adolescent fears, anguish, and pain. Solondz goes even farther in his new movie, Happiness. The movie shows us a family: three grown sisters, a mother, and a father, and their lives together and apart from each other. read more...
