Porky Pig 101 (1935)

Fans of cartoons have complained for years about Warner Home Video's handling of their massive archive. Either the 'toons have been released in huge, almost random collections (like the "Golden" and "Platinum" box sets), or in sporadic sets, like some of the late-era Tom and Jerry collections or the Droopy collection, or not at all (the Tex Avery library). So this 2017 release of 101 mostly black-and-white Porky Pig cartoons, arranged in chronological order over five discs, and running from Porky's debut in 1935 to Porky Pig's Feat (1943), is a very exciting event. It's a bit pricey, but cartoon lovers will absolutely need this in their libraries. read more...

Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014)

Made from the "kids-won't-care-how-badly-we-slapped-this-thing-together" school of filmmaking, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb is the third in a series moneymakers based on funny actors and lots of visual effects. The plots are secondary, like this one: the magic tablet begins to lose its power, so security guard Larry (Ben Stiller), his son (Skyler Gisondo), and a bunch of the exhibits go to London to speak to Merenkahre (Ben Kingsley). There, Sir Lancelot (Dan Stevens) gives them plenty of trouble. Director Shawn Levy and his army of writers bring up ideas, and let them drop. Clumsy cutting ruins many of the jokes, and the action sequences are lifeless. Owen Wilson's lackadaisical line readings are worth a giggle or two, though. And the final goodbye as Theodore Roosevelt (the late Robin Williams) returns to wax is bittersweet, but not because of anything the movie has done. It's the final live-action film for Williams, as well as for Mickey Rooney, who appears in one scene. read more...

Never Give a Sucker an Even Break (1941)

In his last starring role, W.C. Fields plays a version of himself, a Hollywood star who is seen staring at a poster for The Bank Dick (1940), Field's real-life previous movie. There are several sketches, such as Fields trying to order lunch in the world's worst diner. He's also the uncle of rising teen star Gloria Jean; she sings a song at Esoteric Pictures studios and he pitches an idea for his next movie. It's a bizarre, surreal story about a beautiful woman (Susan Miller) living in a mountaintop castle whose mother (Margaret Dumont) keeps her hidden from the world. Fields's character discovers the castle by jumping out of a plane to retrieve his fallen flask! Once the script pitch is finished, the movie goes off in other directions, never bothering with much of a plot or cohesion. Fields would have been about 60 at the time, and he looks ill and frail, which makes some of the humor rather bittersweet. But nonetheless, the movie has many solid laughs, and Fields fans will definitely want to see it. Fields wrote the original story under the pseudonym "Otis Criblecoblis." Kino Lorber released a spiffy Blu-ray in 2020, complete with a useful commentary track by historian Eddy Von Mueller, a short documentary, and trailers for other Kino Lorber comedies. read more...

High Anxiety (1977)

With two hit spoofs under his belt, Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles, Mel Brooks took on the narrower and more difficult target of Alfred Hitchcock films. With horror movies or Westerns, the range was much broader; there was more material to play with. But Hitchcock's movies are already so precise and playful that there's very little room for parody. The best Brooks can do is to place himself in the shower with an angry bellhop outside the curtain, or to run through the park with an army of vengeful birds crapping on his suit. Most of this stuff isn't particularly funny however, and even though I watched High Anxiety for the first time in 2010, I'm not sure it would have been very funny back in 1977 either. read more...
