    Third Person (2014)

Despite the presence of fine actors doing fine work – especially Olivia Wilde bringing intelligence and playfulness to her role -- this misfire is an absolute mess. The gypsy/child-trafficking plot is the weakest; despite the early reveal that it's a scam, the story somehow keeps going, with characters conveniently overlooking crucial events. Coincidences, such as a lost piece of paper, or surprise revelations about someone's identity, feel like total writer's inventions rather than anything arising naturally out of the story. read more...

    Mommy (2015)

Xavier Dolan's Mommy is a movie of little moments and big feelings. Dolan presents the movie mostly in a squarish aspect ratio, wherein his three main characters talk and interact, but occasionally, emotions become too big for the frame. In one remarkable, euphoric moment, a character literally spreads the frame open wide with his hands. read more...

      The Last Wave (1977)

Peter Weir's Australian thriller starts with a bang but slowly grows more conventional. A vicious rainstorm appears, falling from a clear sky, and a strange murder takes place among a group of Aborigines outside a Sydney bar. Lawyer Richard Chamberlain -- who suffers from prophetic nightmares -- is assigned to the case, but ancient tribal secrets prevent the accused from giving any information. Eventually we discover that Chamberlain is that rare white man with enough spiritual power to fully understand the ancient magic. Weir's directorial instincts never falter and he plays up the suspense throughout, but the screenplay lays down its cards too early and wanders off into nonsense. The Criterion Collection's DVD transfer is absolutely beautiful; the disc comes with an interview with Weir, a trailer and optional subtitles. read more...

      Hustle (1975)

After pleasing audiences with The Longest Yard, director Robert Aldrich made one for himself. Considered an auteur in France, Aldrich used his clout to make this European-edged film, a grim, yet fascinatingly sleazy look at corruption in the justice system, and even cast Catherine Deneuve in the bargain. The gamble did not pay off; everyone hatedHustle and it failed. Thirty years on, however, its integrity and patience look positively masterful. read more...

        The Homesman (2014)

Based on a classic novel by Glendon Swarthout, who also wrote The Shootist, The Homesman is something close to a great modern-day Western. As evidenced by his last film, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, director Tommy Lee Jones has a keen eye for hard landscapes (including his own weathered face) and emotional compositions. The Homesman is full of striking imagery: the locked, coffin-like coach, fresh new buildings in hardscrabble dirt, or a disturbed grave on a gnarly plain. read more...
