    Star Trek: Generations (1994)

If you ever find yourself in an argument with a Trekkie, you can end it with three words: "Data's emotion chip." Data's emotion chip to "Star Trek" fans is the equivalent to Jar Jar Binks for Star Wars fans. The seventh "Star Trek" feature film, Star Trek: Generations (1994), is the one with Data's emotion chip. That's only a subplot, though; the real purpose of this film was to say goodbye to the original crew and hello to the crew of "The Next Generation" which would take over the movie franchise. It's kind of a monumental task, and the film more or less botches it. read more...

      Escape from New York (1981)

In elite film circles John Carpenter's name usually elicits weary eye-rolls. Or, from the most devoted fans, "didn't he once do something good a couple of decades ago?" But look closer and Carpenter is one of the few old-school filmmakers working today. Having studied the great directors of the studio system like Howard Hawks and John Ford, Carpenter has more or less based his entire career on their model. He has worked for all different studios, jumping from independent films to larger films. And yet he has always stayed true to his own singular vision. Each and every film Carpetner has made sports his signature style. The new Escape from New York Special Edition (1981, MGM/UA, $29.98) DVD helps prove this point. read more...

Better Call Saul: Season Two (2016)

There's no reason this show should have been as good as it is. A spinoff from the greatest TV show of all time, Breaking Bad? It sounds like a terrible idea. But it was always intriguing, given that creator Vince Gilligan (also a writer on The X-Files) was behind it. And, indeed, as soon as Better Call Saul started in 2015, it was instantly its own entity, alive and amazing in its own way. read more...

André Gregory & Wallace Shawn: 3 Films (2015)

The Criterion Collection released this remarkable box set of three films, spanning several decades, each featuring the writers and actors Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory at their finest. Directed by Louis Malle, My Dinner with Andre (1981) was a landmark movie of its time, and is still remarkable to witness. In many ways, the follow-up, Malle's final film, Vanya on 42nd Street (1994) was even better. (See my separate reviews of both films for more details.) The third film, A Master Builder (2013), came nearly 20 years later, with Jonathan Demme taking over for the late Malle. read more...

John Wayne Westerns Film Collection (2015)

Warner Home Video has released this five-disc Blu-ray set of John Wayne titles, highlighting two new catalog releases, The Train Robbers (1973) and Cahill: United States Marshal (1973). These are both decidedly minor, but mildly entertaining late Wayne vehicles, the former a lighthearted affair from Burt Kennedy (featuring a lovely Ann-Margaret) and the latter a more serious effort. However, the two films really begin to look like filler compared to the three masterworks in the package: John Ford's Fort Apache (1948), Ford's The Searchers (1956), and Howard Hawks's Rio Bravo (1959). These three discs are from previous issues, and come, more or less, with the same extras (but without any bonus discs). As a Wayne fan without any of these movies in high-def, I was grateful for this release, and am making it a permanent addition to my library. read more...
