    Panic (2000)

Henry Bromell's Panic is so good I almost couldn't believe it. But I pinched myself and it's true. It's one of the best movies I've seen this year. I love this movie. read more...

    Bird (1988)

Any true fan knows about Clint Eastwood's love for jazz music. Many of his urban action films feature jazzy soundtracks, sometimes performed by the man himself (who plays a mean piano). Eastwood made the switch from Hollywood icon to great world director with his viciously underrated Bird (1988). This gentle, moody bio-pic of Charlie Parker (brilliantly played by Forest Whitaker) emphasized slowness and darkness, taking time to explore the corners of Parker's life, rather than zooming over the surface. Diane Venora plays a sympathetic Chan Parker, and Samuel E. Wright is Dizzy Gillespie. read more...

The Squid and the Whale (2005)

Writer/director Noah Baumbach has come into his own. Previously he completed three unremarkable features (Kicking and Screaming, Highball and Mr. Jealousy) that would have sent most filmmakers running back to a normal, steady day job. But Mr. Baumbach persisted, writing pieces for The New Yorker, marrying Jennifer Jason Leigh and co-authoring the latest Wes Anderson film, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. He has returned to filmmaking with a new gusto, and The Squid and the Whale arrives as one of the most acutely observed views of family life in a great while. read more...

        The Godfather Part III (1990)

Very few have stepped up to bat to defend The Godfather Part III (1990), which I consider a masterpiece and the equal of Parts I and II. As Coppola reveals (several times) in his commentary track, Godfather III was originally to be called The Death of Michael Corleone, and that's essentially what it is. It's the final chapter of a dark life and an epilogue -- one that ends appropriately with a whimper instead of a bang. read more...

        Control (2007)

Michael Winterbottom's 24 Hour Party People (2002) touched briefly on the brilliant tragic career of Ian Curtis and his band Joy Division, but it was always a powerful subject deserving of its own film. Now acclaimed music video director Anton Corbijn (Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box," U2's "One," etc.) makes his feature debut with this two-hour biopic, and though it follows the usual biopic formula, Corbijn's stark, black-and-white widescreen visual scheme restores some of the story's real power. read more...
