Lo and Behold, Reveries of the Connected World (2016)

Werner Herzog's Lo and Behold, Reveries of the Connected World is one of the best of his recent documentaries; it's thoughtful yet entertaining, amusing yet heartbreaking, and sometimes beautiful. It should give web-savvy viewers plenty to think and talk about. Along with the great director's Grizzly Man, Encounters at the End of the World, and Cave of Forgotten Dreams, it's a must-see. At one point, Herzog asks "does the internet dream of itself," and through a series of interviews, he spends the rest of the movie exploring that notion. read more...

    Close-Up (1990)

What makes Abbas Kiarostami one of our greatest living filmmakers? He's capable of making beautiful films, carefully planned and executed, that tell about the human soul. But at the same time, he's able to make quick, slapdash, hurried pictures that tell about the human soul. And they all carry the Kiarostami seal. One of these slapdash titles, Close-Up (1990), is one of Kiarostami's most remarkable movies, and indeed one of the most remarkable of all movies. read more...

    Platform (2000)

Jia Zhang-ke's second feature is an epic masterpiece that tells a specifically Chinese story, and yet it does so in a completely universal way. Set between 1980 and 1990, when China moved from the final vestiges of life under Chairman Mao to the Cultural Revolution and Westernized consumer capitalism, Platform is similar in a way to Tian Zhuangzhuang's The Blue Kite. But Platform tells its story through the lives of four young people, all performers in a kind of singing and dancing pop group (called -- get this -- the "All Star Rock and Breakdance Electronic Band"). read more...

    Inequality for All (2013)

Many documentaries these days are about how terrible everything is right now. Maybe this is because things actually are terrible, and because there are a few heroic, outspoken souls out there who want to try to do something, even if it's something small. Everything big starts with something small, after all. It can be hard to sit down to watch something that's going to be depressing, which is why most of these films end with a bit of hope, and with information for viewers who wish to get involved. read more...
