The Falcon and the Snowman (1985)

John Schlesinger's The Falcon and the Snowman tells the gripping true story of Christopher Boyce and Andrew Daulton Lee, who met as altar boys and who were eventually arrested for selling classified information to the Soviet Union. Unlike many true stories, Schlesinger and screenwriter Steven Zaillian focus on details, character, and atmosphere. They manage to capture the slow arc in which two American guys, from wealthy families, could somehow justify doing what they did. read more...

      Pawn Sacrifice (2015)

Director Edward Zwick is pretty much an invention of the movie business. Ever since the inception of the Oscars, studios have divided their investments between movies that will hopefully make money, and movies that will hopefully make them look good. Oftentimes a genuinely great filmmaker will make a genuinely great film that actually gets noticed, but just in case, directors like Zwick are needed. Whereas a genuinely great director makes a great film from his soul, Zwick makes films based on what other great films might look like. However, his new movie, Pawn Sacrifice, somehow feels more like a struggle than a statement, and it's arguably his best movie in a couple of decades. read more...

        A Most Violent Year (2014)

Plenty of today's filmmakers are in awe of the American movie renaissance of the 1970s, a period that began roughly at the end of the 1960s, with Bonnie and Clyde and Easy Rider, and ended at the end of the 1970s, with Star Wars and Raging Bull. It was a time that older studio executives conceded that they didn't know what they were doing, realized that the youth market was the way to go, and hired fresh, young directors (Scorsese, Schrader, Coppola, De Palma, Bogdanovich, Spielberg, Lucas, Friedkin, Malick, Altman, etc.) to do their thing. These directors had plenty of control and could take plenty of risks. Movies tended to be gritty and character-driven, and even allowed for certain experimentation. read more...

        The Asphalt Jungle (1950)

While still making its colorful feel-good musicals and comedies, MGM opened a second wing in the late '40s and early '50s to make grittier, more realistic dramas. John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle is one of these. Though it was conceived to look like a low-budget "B" movie, it featured an "A"-list director who had just won an Oscar (for The Treasure of the Sierra Madre), and an excessive running time (112 minutes) that would have disqualified it for "B" movie status. read more...

          Crossfire (1947)

After Billy Wilder's Double Indemnity, Edward Dmytryk's Crossfire was the only 1940s-era film noir to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, and the reason is clear. Not because it's better than any other noir, but because it has a very strong and powerful message against anti-Semitism. read more...
