Celine and Julie Go Boating (1974)

I became a fan of director Jacques Rivette in 1992 after seeing his four-hour La Belle Noiseuse on the big screen. Unlike his "Cahiers du Cinema" partners, though, Rivette's films are few and far between in the United States and it was difficult for me to see anything more. Thankfully, this early masterpiece was recently released on home video, despite all the earmarks of a financial failure. There are video gods out there that watch over us film buffs. read more...

My Own Private Idaho (1991)

Gus Van Sant's My Own Private Idaho was my favorite film in 1991. I saw it three times in the theater (easy, given that I worked at a movie theater and could get free passes to it). I was drawn to it perhaps the way earlier audiences might have been drawn to an outlaw film like Rebel Without a Cause. It's a mixed-up grab bag of linear storytelling and experimental techniques, with elements of Shakespeare mashed up against a totally modern story of sexualized teens. River Phoenix gives perhaps the strongest performance of his remarkable, mercurial, and tragically short career as Mike, a narcoleptic street hustler. While servicing a client, he meets Scott Favor (Keanu Reeves), a fellow hustler who belongs to a wealthy family. They begin to hang out together, and with a Falstaff-like figure. They travel, there's a betrayal, a song by the Pogues, and things drift ever onward like a road that goes all the way around the world. It's as touching a portrait of loneliness and need as was ever created in the American independent cinema. read more...

8½ (1963)

Federico Fellini's manic, larger-than-life 8 ½ (1963) rules as the king of all Italian movies. It's the Citizen Kane, the Children of Paradise of Italy. read more...

Belle de Jour (1967)

If Martin Scorsese's recent films have been disappointing (Cape Fear, The Age of Innocence), at least he is using his power as a filmmaker to re-release classic films to the general public. Thanks to Scorsese, Mirimax picked up the distribution rights to the "lost" classic by director Luis Buñuel (who is probably most famous for slicing up that cow eye in 1928's Un Chien Andalou). Its subject matter understandably offended some upon its initial release, but it's the best film you can see in the theaters right now. read more...

The Dance of Reality (2014)

A month or so ago, I thoroughly enjoyed the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune, which told the story of an extraordinary movie that was never made. As the documentary came to an end, it revealed that Alejandro Jodorowsky had made his first film in 23 years, The Dance of Reality. As I watched that new film, I couldn't help wondering if maybe it, too, had been better left as a myth rather than a completed film. read more...
