    A Coffee in Berlin (2014)

I'm so glad people are making black-and-white movies again. Last year, I reviewed four new black-and-white movies, and three of them made my year's ten best list (the fourth was a runner-up). Black-and-white has a whole different feel from color; it can make things seem darker, scarier, more romantic, more profound, more timeless. I wanted to see A Coffee in Berlin, I admit, partly because of the black-and-white. Yet no cinematography can make a good film great. A Coffee in Berlin is only a good film, but it does have a very good ending. read more...

      A Separation (2011)

Longtime and loyal readers know that I am a fan of Iranian cinema. I saw my first Iranian film, Gabbeh, back in 1997 and I have been seen some 50 of them since then; in a culture of repression and censorship, certain filmmakers have found amazing ways to express personal and poetic visions. I'm always happy when one of these films goes beyond a small circle of cinephiles. For example, the great director Abbas Kiarostami's latest film, Certified Copy, recently won the Best Foreign Language Film award from my group, the San Francisco Film Critic's Circle. (Although, to be fair, it was not made in Iran.) read more...

        Complete Unknown (2016)

In the first moments of Joshua Marston's Complete Unknown, we see Rachel Weisz in many different guises. She seems to be a nurse, and a magician's assistant, and more. Her hairstyle changes, and she seems to be living in different climates, with totally different personalities. Is this a series of alternate realities in some sci-fi movie? No. Her Alice (or Jenny) is just a girl who once decided to change her identity and start over, and then became addicted to doing that, again and again. This story is about what happens when she decides to meet up once again with someone she once knew, Tom (Michael Shannon). read more...

          Remember (2016)

Canadian director Atom Egoyan offers his best work in ages with this quietly observant drama. Paying special attention to sounds, places, and tones, the movie turns unexpectedly moving and powerful. Remember recalls Egoyan's best films, Exotica, Felicia's Journey, and the Oscar-nominated The Sweet Hereafter; like those, it's an exploration of unsettling things simmering under the surface. A lesser director could have played this like a cheap thriller, with more suspense, but Egoyan explores the deeper meanings of things. read more...

            Henri-Georges Clouzot's Inferno (2009)

This documentary made its U.S. premiere at the 2009 New York Film Festival, made some festival and arthouse rounds in 2010, and finally had a San Francisco opening in 2011. It began, ostensibly, when film archivist Serge Bromberg found himself stuck in an elevator with Henri-Georges Clouzot's widow, and she told him about the late director's ordeal shooting L'Enfer (Inferno, or Hell) in the mid-1960s. The new documentary unveils lots of amazing-looking footage for the first time, as well as interviewing some of the surviving players. read more...
