They Live by Night (1949)

Nicholas Ray's They Live by Night (1949) is one of the greatest debut features in movie history. Ray's extraordinary use of physical space as a representation of the characters' emotional state is already fully in place, as if he were born to moviemaking. Farley Granger plays Bowie, a young escaped convict accompanied by two veterans. When he's wounded, he's taken to a safe house where he meets and falls in love with Keechie (Cathy O'Donnell). Neither Bowie nor Keechie have much experience in the ways of romance, but they decide to run away together. Unfortunately, the gang presses Bowie into one last job, which goes horribly wrong and Bowie becomes a hot target. read more...

Labor Day (2013)

There's nothing really wrong with the idea of Labor Day. It comes from a reputable novel, a reputable director, and a reputable cast. On another day, they -- or someone -- could have made something terrific out of it. But what was actually made and being released in theaters is a total misfire. It's OK in some spots, and appallingly awful in other spots. It's as if the filmmakers started digging in a particular direction, perhaps realized their error, but decided it was too late and kept on digging. read more...

A Star Is Born (2018)

If nothing else, the fourth version of A Star Is Born shows that Bradley Cooper knows his way around the back of a camera, and that Lady Gaga is a natural-born star. Otherwise, it's not a particularly great or profound movie, but it's a hugely enjoyable one, with so many amazing scenes that it hardly matters whether they add up to anything. read more...

The Exception (2017)

This quasi-biographical drama could have been a dry-as-a-bone history lesson, filled with exposition and explanation, but instead it turns into a glossy romance; it's soft, but ripe and full-blooded. read more...

French Cancan (1954)

The colorful forerunner to Moulin Rouge, Jean Renoir's French Cancan tells a romantic story of the famous club's origins. Jean Gabin stars as an aging showman who discovers a beautiful little laundress (Françoise Arnoul) and teaches her to dance for the stage. She falls in love with him, but, alas, he's not hers to have. In the meantime, a wealthy prince and a modest baker also fall for her. This is lighter than usual fare for Renoir, but his usual gracefulness is ever-present and he adds a distinct human center to the color and dazzle. read more...
