Too Late Blues (1961)

John Cassavetes had been a handsome, severe actor in television and "B" movies when he raised a few dollars to make the landmark independent movie Shadows in 1959. After that, he juggled two sides of a career, in marketable ventures (The Dirty Dozen, Rosemary's Baby, The Fury), and in pure, artistic achievements (Faces, A Woman Under the Influence, Love Streams). Sometimes these things crossed comfortably, as in his masterpiece The Killing of a Chinese Bookie -- set among the world of strip joints and contract murders -- or uncomfortably, as in Gloria, a script he wrote to sell, but ended up directing. read more...

The Counselor (2013)

I missed the press screening of Ridley Scott's The Counselor due to a screening conflict with Bad Grandpa (of all things), so I missed out on all the early buzz. It was not long before I started hearing very negative things about it, such as: It's dumb. It has no thrills or suspense. It's slow and boring. It doesn't live up to expectations. read more...

    August: Osage County (2013)

Over the past few years, the great director William Friedkin has brought two Tracy Letts plays to the big screen, with masterful results. Both Bug (2007) and Killer Joe (2012) were incredible films, both highly underrated. Now here comes another Letts play, August: Osage County, made by a slightly less intriguing director than Friedkin, John Wells. He has only made one other feature, The Company Men, which I did not see. read more...

The Lost City of Z (2017)

Filmmaker James Gray makes intelligent, good-looking, grown-up movies that are admirable but somehow rather reserved; this real-life adventure tale is a more sprawling work, but the result is similar. read more...

        Biutiful (2010)

The acclaimed Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Amores Perros, 21 Grams, Babel) often outlines complex, multi-character stories with a heavy hand, and it could be argued that his serious, socially-aware tales are designed more for awards and accolades than they are for personal or artistic reasons. By contrast, Inarritu's friends and colleagues Guillermo Del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron have tended to concentrate on more visual, personal, and intelligent genre pictures, and have received far less praise. read more...
