The Lost City of Z (2017)

Filmmaker James Gray makes intelligent, good-looking, grown-up movies that are admirable but somehow rather reserved; this real-life adventure tale is a more sprawling work, but the result is similar. read more...

      The Hurt Locker (2009)

I've been dragged to most of the recent Iraq war movies, and some of them have been interesting and informative, but they all have one thing in common: a somber, self-important, condescending attitude about the horrors and futility of war. The problem is that I already know all this going in. What I want to see is some explanation. If war is so horrible, why does everyone keep making war movies? Why on earth should we watch them? Certainly it's not to change anyone's mind, because these movies generally preach to the converted. But finally, here comes Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker, and it does something that all the others fail to do. It considers the dangerous idea that, indeed, war can be fun. read more...

      Dirty Wars (2013)

An Oscar nominee for Best Documentary, Dirty Wars follows journalist Jeremy Scahill of The Nation as he investigates secret nighttime raids by American soldiers in Afghanistan. Eventually he learns that these raids, performed by the all-powerful Joint Special Operations Command, have taken place in countries not actually at war, and that several civilians have been killed. He makes one astounding discovery after another, including that an American citizen has been targeted by his own country. But no matter how quickly or efficiently a "kill list" is completed, there's always another, longer list waiting. read more...

      Babel (2006)

Writer Guillermo Arriaga and director Alejandro González Inarritu team up once again for another portrait of society's social ills, this one even longer and less enjoyable than Amores Perros or 21 Grams. Skillfully made, but preachy as all get-out, the film crosses four stories. read more...

      Bob le Flambeur (1955)

Most people credit Jean-Luc Godard and Francois Truffaut with the beginning of the French New Wave, and technically that's true. But both of them would be the first to tip their hats to Jean-Pierre Melville. Godard even gave Melville a worthy cameo in Breathless, as the old gent Jean Seberg interviews at the airport. read more...
