Neighbors (2014)

In movie comedies that embrace cheerful, filthy chaos and anarchy, shocking viewers into laughter is something that happens only rarely, such as the campfire scene in Blazing Saddles or the zipper scene in There's Something About Mary. Hence, to pull off a successful raucous comedy, filmmakers must concentrate on the "cheerful" part. read more...

What's New Pussycat? (1965)

My friend, the excellent former film critic Rob Blackwelder, claims What's New Pussycat? as one of his three favorite films. In a huge lapse of friendship, I had never seen it until today, in 2014, when Kino Lorber released a new Blu-ray edition. I do wish I could join my friend in his enthusiasm, but I found the film to be only occasionally funny, and an uneasy mix of flabby and frantic. However, the excellent cast always seems to have been working extra hard, and their combined efforts result in a kind of amiable quality. They can make you smile, even if laughter is a bit much to ask. read more...

Heartbreakers (2001)

Magically, this 123-minute con-man comedy floats along like a Miami Beach breeze and never wears out its welcome. Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt play a mother-daughter team; the mother gets married and the daughter sexually temps the newly-married man, bringing on a quickie divorce and a large settlement. Ray Liotta plays the movie's first victim, and Gene Hackman turns up in a brilliant comic performance as the latest victim, a millionaire bachelor on his last legs (you'll never smoke again after you witness Hackman's nasty coughing fits). Jason Lee plays a contented bar owner who captures Hewitt's affections for real. read more...

Central Intelligence (2016)

Diminutive Kevin Hart seems to work best in movies when paired with a polar opposite, like the sneering street thug Ice Cube, or the very large but childlike Will Ferrell. In the mildly entertaining Central Intelligence, he's paired with brawny former pro wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. It works, but the hitch this time is that Johnson has stretched a little further than usual with his comic chops and has created a hilarious character. read more...
