Nightmares in Red, White and Blue (2009)

Recently screened at San Francisco's Another Hole in The Head Film Festival, this is a fun and smart documentary for horror fans, filled with dozens of great clips, ranging from the earliest silent-era chillers to the past decade and films like Saw (2004). It includes many of my favorites, and probably yours too. read more...

      Blue Ruin (2014)

Jeremy Saulnier's recent Green Room was one of the most satisfying genre films of 2016, and so I wanted a chance to check out his equally satisfying earlier feature, the crime story Blue Ruin (2013). In it, a bearded, homeless man called Dwight (Macon Blair) collects bottles on the beach and sleeps in his beat-up, blue Pontiac. A cop approaches and solemnly informs him that Wade Cleland, the man who killed Dwight's father, has just been released from prison. Dwight immediately decides to get revenge. Rather than the entire movie focusing on this one act, it happens rather quickly, and rather clumsily, in a bar bathroom, with a knife. read more...

        Alias Betty (2001)

While Pulp Fiction began with a printed dictionary definition of pulp, Claude Miller's Alias Betty, which opens today at the Lumiere, begins with a written dictionary definition of "porphyry," a blood imbalance that results in irritation and violence. The film then cuts to a woman and a young girl riding on a train, and we immediately begin to worry over which of them has the blood imbalance, and what will happen to the other one. read more...

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005)

The more I think about this Western directed by Tommy Lee Jones, the more I like it. It's a clear homage to existential, masculine films like Sam Peckinpah's Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974) and Monte Hellman's The Shooting (1966). And though it lacks the grungy, poetic grace of those films, it has its own unique, rugged atmosphere. read more...

            Knightriders (1981)

This non-horror movie by the master, George A. Romero, is a strange one. It seems to have begun as a "wouldn't it be funny if..." discussion, taking the title, Knightriders, and envisioning knights that ride motorcycles instead of horses. Thus came this story of a traveling band of performers, led by the "king," Billy (Ed Harris). They make breakaway weapons and joust for crowds; characters are named after figures from the King Arthur and Robin Hood legends. Romero takes a long 146 minutes to explore this world, showing the seams at the edges of the operation, and juxtaposes that with Billy's fierce commitment to authenticity and his dedication to his craft. Some riders try to break away from the group (it's becoming too popular) or try to overthrow the king, and women get involved as well (horrors!). It's a true oddity, but Romero's use of the idea and setting to explore human nature is as vivid as ever, and it's all unexpectedly involving. Horror makeup and stunt legend Tom Savini co-stars as "Morgan" and Ken Foree (from Dawn of the Dead) is "Little John." Cute Patricia Tallman went on to star in Savini's 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead. Author Stephen King and his wife Tabitha appear in a funny little cameo as spectators. The following year, King and Harris worked with Romero on Creepshow. read more...
