Battling Butler (1926)

Most fans and critics agree that boxing picture Battling Butler (1926) is probably Buster Keaton's least successful picture, though it was a money-maker in its day. Based on a play, the material was a bit too literal and plot-driven to have inspired Keaton's creative juices. He plays Alfred Butler, a rich layabout whose manservant provides even the simplest tasks. ("Arrange it," Butler continually orders.) read more...

The Max Linder Collection (1921)

Max Linder was an early, tragic figure in silent comedy. He was born in France and made many short comedies beginning in 1905. He began directing in 1908, by 1912 was the most popular and highest-paid film star in the world. He apparently influenced Chaplin. He eventually came to Hollywood and made three features, but scarred from the first World War and unable to fit in, he eventually returned to France and committed suicide in 1925. read more...

Alan Partridge (2014)

Steve Coogan's Alan Partridge character first appeared on television twenty years ago, and now makes his big screen debut in Alan Partridge. Even if you don't know the character, but are familiar with Coogan, you should enjoy this slyly witty movie; its humor is not dissimilar to the UK version of "The Office." read more...

The Lemon Drop Kid (1951)

I'm surprised this halfway decent Bob Hope movie hasn't become a Christmas classic. It's silly and fun, with just the right combination of big city-savvy and sentimental sweet. Hope plays an in-debt gambler -- very loosely based on a Damon Runyon character -- who must swindle a huge pile of cash during the holidays, so he sets up a fake old-folks home ("The Nellie Thursday Home For Old Dolls")! A range of delightful character actors either helps or hinders. Hope is pretty stressed throughout the movie, and it's a delightful break when "Silver Bells" comes on, showing Christmastime in the city at its best. Apparently co-writer Frank Tashlin directed a chunk of the movie without credit. Future Plan 9 from Outer Space star Tor Johnson appears as (not much of a stretch) a Swedish wrestler. read more...

Three Ages (1923)

Buster Keaton's feature debut Three Ages (1923) was filmed in three segments just in case it flopped, it could be cut into three short films and re-released. Ostensibly a spoof of Griffith's Intolerance, Keaton's film looks at love triangles throughout the ages, specifically the Caveman era, ancient Rome, and the modern era. It's not one of his most inspired efforts overall, but it contains many memorable moments, such as Buster's entrance on a dinosaur, or the gorgeous moment in which he tumbles over a cliff and gives the camera a kiss as he goes. read more...
