Possession (1981)

Surely one of the most deranged, mind-bogglingly bizarre horror movies ever made, Andrzej Zulawski cult classic Possession (1981) is a hard movie to find, particularly in its uncut, 123-minute version. So there's this husband, Mark (Sam Neill) and wife, Anna (Isabelle Adjani) who fight. The wife disappears. She might be having an affair. The husband finds that their son's teacher (also played by Adjani) is a dead ringer for his wife. A private detective is hired. A second apartment is discovered, and inside it is... well... a kind of... thing. Zulawski, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 75, directs with a deceptive quality; things seem normal until they suddenly don't. It's a lurching feeling, like a waking hallucination. Although barely anyone knew quite what to make of it when it was first shown, Adjani at least won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival. read more...

The Ornithologist (2017)

The Portuguese director João Pedro Rodrigues (O Fantasma, Two Drifters, To Die Like a Man) is usually puzzling, and polarizing. I tend to like his films, but he tends to alienate many critics. He's openly gay but doesn't show gay themes in a soft or coddling way. He can be absurd and surreal, but not necessarily at the same time. His new The Ornithologist feels like it tiptoes around territory previously explored by David Lynch, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Alejandro Jodorowsky, and it had me for most of its running time, but as it reaches the final ten or so minutes, it more or less dives off a cliff. It lost me. read more...

The Trial (1962)

Orson Welles called it the best movie he ever made. No, it's not Citizen Kane (1941), it's The Trial (1962), which has finally been released on an essential DVD. Welles always claimed that Kane was the only film over which he had complete control, but The Trial came close. He had control over every aspect except the music, which to my ears, turned out great. read more...

El Topo (1970)

Alejandro Jodorowsky's most famous film, El Topo, begins as a gunfighter, El Topo (Jodorowsky), and his naked son (Jodorowsky's son Brontis) ride across the desert. They come across a town full of corpses, and El Topo meets a woman whom he names Mara (Mara Lorenzio). She challenges him to defeat the four top gunfighters in the desert, which he does, though not without trouble and a bit of cheating. (A mysterious woman in black, played by Paula Romo, shows up at this point.) The two women leave El Topo wounded, and he wakes up twenty years later, having been cared for by a band of cave-dwelling little people. He vows to liberate them by digging a tunnel that leads to the outside world. (The title, "El Topo," means "the mole.") read more...

Apocalypse Now (1979)

Only a few times in cinema history has an artist gone mad, drunk on his own power and genius, and created a loony, foolhardy, giant-sized masterpiece. Usually this comes on the heels of some huge box office success that allows both artist and financiers to believe that he can do this mad thing. D.W. Griffith mounted Intolerance, the biggest movie ever made after the huge success of The Birth of a Nation. Erich von Stroheim took on a 12-hour version of Frank Norris' McTeague, now called Greed and existing only in a 140 minute version (a newer version uses stills to restore lost scenes and runs 242 minutes). Bernardo Bertolucci made a five-hour, intercontinental epic called 1900 after the success of Last Tango in Paris. And Werner Herzog attempted to tell the story of Fitzcarraldo by hauling a life-sized ship over a life-sized mountain. read more...
