    The Two Jakes (1990)

It didn't take long for Chinatown (1974) to be considered an all-time classic, and its reputation only becomes more solidified with each passing year. By 1990, it was already an outrage, sacrilegious, to consider making a sequel. Actually, private detective J.J. Gittes was always supposed to have his own trilogy, but no matter how good Part 2 was, it would always and forever be compared unfavorably to its predecessor. And The Two Jakes is really good. read more...

The Falcon and the Snowman (1985)

John Schlesinger's The Falcon and the Snowman tells the gripping true story of Christopher Boyce and Andrew Daulton Lee, who met as altar boys and who were eventually arrested for selling classified information to the Soviet Union. Unlike many true stories, Schlesinger and screenwriter Steven Zaillian focus on details, character, and atmosphere. They manage to capture the slow arc in which two American guys, from wealthy families, could somehow justify doing what they did. read more...

        One False Move (1992)

This excellent crime movie about murder, drugs, and money came out about the same time as Reservoir Dogs but did not receive the same kind of attention, aside from Siskel & Ebert, who famously chose it as one of the year's best films. The movie has two interwoven stories. The first follows three bad guys on the run through Texas and Arkansas: the quiet, African-American Pluto (Michael Beach), the white psychotic Ray (Billy Bob Thornton), and his girlfriend, Fantasia (Cynda Williams). The other story follows small town sheriff Dale "Hurricane" Dixon (Bill Paxton), and the two big city police detectives, Dud Cole (Jim Metzler) and John McFeely (Earl Billings), who think they know more than the local hayseed. The connection between the two stories is amazing. Director Carl Franklin, who had made low-rent action movies for Roger Corman, went on to direct the excellent Devil in a Blue Dress. Co-star and co-screenwriter Thornton went on to write, direct and star in the excellent Sling Blade. read more...

          The Big Combo (1955)

Joseph H. Lewis's The Big Combo looks and feels more sophisticated than his more primal, more erotic Gun Crazy, but it has its own perverse pleasures. Up front, there's the astounding black-and-white cinematography by the great John Alton, who used blacker blacks and whiter whites than anyone else in the business. He creates pools of hope and despair right from the beginning as a gangster's unhappy girlfriend, Susan Lowell (Jean Wallace) tries to run away from her duty of sitting next to him at a boxing match. She passes through darkness and light before a pair of henchmen catch her. read more...

            The Missouri Breaks (1976)

The Missouri Breaks seems like something worked out in the mind of a studio executive, hiring two recent Best Actor Oscar winners and box office champs, Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson, as well as director Arthur Penn, who had helped re-shape the entire movie business years earlier with Bonnie and Clyde. When it finally arrived, it was critically panned and a financial flop. Now, however, it looks quite a bit more interesting, with its odd, laggy rhythms and weird touches. read more...
