Through a Glass Darkly (1961)

After the worldwide success of The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries, the very hot Ingmar Bergman turned to a trio of films to try to ask some complicated questions about religion and faith. The results are Through a Glass Darkly (1961), Winter Light (1962) and The Silence (1963), and each is better than the one before. read more...

The Immigrant (2014)

James Gray is an accomplished, professional filmmaker. He makes very good films, often quite a bit better than the usual releases. He went to film school, and judging only from what I've seen, he seems drawn to the American films of the 1970s. Yet unlike Quentin Tarantino and others who pay homage to older films, Gray doesn't seem to have much enthusiasm or energy. He seems to want to inhabit a 1970s mentality, making films about the dark side of human nature, without actually being aware of what it all means or where it came from. read more...

    The Great Raid (2005)

A World War II picture with a title like The Great Raid might conjure up images of gung-ho war classics like The Great Escape, Hell and High Water, Merrill's Marauders, They Were Expendable, The Dirty Dozen, or The Guns of Navarone. Unfortunately, the days of that kind of war movie are long gone. War movies today must walk a fine line between nobility and responsibility. Instead of gut-busting images of Lee Marvin or John Wayne, we get puffy, introspective images of Tom Hanks. But The Great Raid doesn't even score an "A" list cast, much less anyone with a hardened jawbone whom we can rally around. read more...

    A Separation (2011)

Longtime and loyal readers know that I am a fan of Iranian cinema. I saw my first Iranian film, Gabbeh, back in 1997 and I have been seen some 50 of them since then; in a culture of repression and censorship, certain filmmakers have found amazing ways to express personal and poetic visions. I'm always happy when one of these films goes beyond a small circle of cinephiles. For example, the great director Abbas Kiarostami's latest film, Certified Copy, recently won the Best Foreign Language Film award from my group, the San Francisco Film Critic's Circle. (Although, to be fair, it was not made in Iran.) read more...

      Barbara (2013)

Christian Petzold's Barbara manages to depict horror and heroism in the East Germany of the early 1980s, without resorting to hysterics or preaching. This is a remarkably subtle movie, spending most of its energy zeroing in on the clenched face of its heroine, looking for cracks. read more...
