The Hunger Games (2012)

It begins in the future, in the 74th year of the Hunger Games, which were invented as a way to control the masses after an unsuccessful uprising. Two "tributes," a boy and a girl, are chosen from each of 12 districts. After some preparation, the 24 competitors are sent to the battlefield, where only one will emerge alive. The entire thing is broadcast and commented upon in hideous reality TV-style. read more...

Divergent (2014)

I wonder if the bar for all these young adult, sci-fi/fantasy/romance movies has been set too low? Could it be that teenage brains are too underdeveloped to comprehend more complex ideas and richer themes, or is it that studios and filmmakers simply assume so, based on what has worked before? read more...

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

It was fun going to the The Empire Strikes Back when I was 11 and seeing my favorite characters again in new situations. At the time, I considered Star Wars the better movie of the two because of the cliffhanger ending of The Empire Strikes Back. Then, in college, I considered Star Wars better because of its classic Joseph Campbell-type themes. Now, in 1997, seeing the big screen re-release of the two movies within weeks of each other, I finally relent and admit that The Empire Strikes Back is the better of the two. In fact, it's clearly the best -- and the most warmly human -- of the entire series. read more...

Nerve (2016)

This flyweight thriller for the new millennium is graphically flashy, with decent, likable characters and adrenaline-fueled thrills, even if it grows ever more implausible and ultimately disposable. Yet it does offer a spectacular condemnation of mob mentality and internet trolling, rewarding kindness and responsibility. Co-directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman previously brought us the internet dating scam story Catfish as well as the surveillance camera-powered Paranormal Activity 3, and seem to have their fingers on the pulse of... something. read more...
