You Were Never Really Here (2018)

The Scotland-born Lynne Ramsay returns with her fourth feature film in a long 18 years. You Were Never Really Here is no less dark and brutal than her other works, but it's also a welcome film noir for our modern times. Her remarkable debut Ratcatcher (2001) was something of a coming-of-age story set in a garbage-strewn Glasgow. Her even better follow-up Morvern Callar (2002) told the story of a road trip taken by two women in the wake of death. A long time passed before the controversial We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011), a movie I could not get behind because of its uneasy combination of message-mongering and exploitation. read more...

Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974)

Mostly everyone hated this dreamy, dreary Sam Peckinpah film when it opened in 1974, but it has aged very well and has slowly emerged as a classic -- one of the director's best films. Warren Oates stars as an American piano player stuck in rural Mexico. He hears about a large bounty on the head of Alfredo Garcia, a man who impregnated a wealthy landowner's daughter. He hits the road with his girlfriend (Isela Vega), but his trip soon turns into a murderous and nightmarishly personal odyssey. Oates winds up driving around with the head in a burlap bag swarming with flies, and talking to it (referring to it as "Al") as if it were the only soul in the world he can trust. read more...

      Cold Water (1994)

Cold Water was the breakthrough feature for Olivier Assayas, a fascinating, undeniably talented, but chameleon-like French director. He started, not unlike the legendary members of the French New Wave, as a film critic, and then used his knowledge and understanding of film to become a filmmaker. His films range from ultra-modern experiments (Irma Vep) to very old-fashioned character studies (Summer Hours), and --like his recent works Clouds of Sils Maria and Personal Shopper -- Cold Water wonderfully bridges the gap between them. read more...

        Red Road (2007)

Jackie (Kate Dickie) looks a bit like Chrissie Hynde (of the rock group the Pretenders) in a kind of homely/sexy way. She sits gazing into a bank of video monitors. For her job, she watches, godlike, all the people who pass by the myriad of video cameras planted all about Glasgow. If trouble arises, she makes a call and someone (hopefully) shows up on the scene. It seems like the perfect job for her, hovering over other people's lives without the slightest interest in her own. She appears lost, or hollow, and the director Andrea Arnold pulls off the admirable task of making her interesting without immediately giving away her secrets. When those secrets finally come out, they do so in such a way that avoids the obvious "Shyamalan twist." Refreshingly, Red Road is a movie about a person and not a gimmick. read more...

          Joe (2014)

Director David Gordon Green has divided his time between broad comedies (Pineapple Express, The Sitter) and thoughtful, lyrical dramas (Snow Angels, Prince Avalanche), but this is the first time he has descended into a world as violent and as hopeless as the one in Joe. Fortunately, Green is as observant as ever, and he not only conjures up a vivid, self-contained universe, but peoples it with fascinating, damaged characters. Yet no matter how lowdown they may appear, Green seems to understand their humanity. read more...
