The Great Raid (2005)

A World War II picture with a title like The Great Raid might conjure up images of gung-ho war classics like The Great Escape, Hell and High Water, Merrill's Marauders, They Were Expendable, The Dirty Dozen, or The Guns of Navarone. Unfortunately, the days of that kind of war movie are long gone. War movies today must walk a fine line between nobility and responsibility. Instead of gut-busting images of Lee Marvin or John Wayne, we get puffy, introspective images of Tom Hanks. But The Great Raid doesn't even score an "A" list cast, much less anyone with a hardened jawbone whom we can rally around. read more...

The Hornet's Nest (2014)

Mike Boettcher has been a war correspondent for decades, most frequently embedded in Iraq and Afghanistan. During this time, he has missed out on much of his home life, and missed seeing his son growing up. Heading off on his latest assignment, his grown son Carlos demands to come along, and Mike sees it as an opportunity to at last bond with him. But their destination includes some of the deadliest spots in Afghanistan, more or less right in the Taliban's own backyard. In this documentary, both men witness death and courage like they have never seen before, and both discover something new about themselves. read more...

Incendies (2010)

I have already ranted about the problems with the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Up to now I have seen three of the five nominees for 2010, and none of them were much good, including the actual winner, In a Better World. But the fourth nominee, Denis Villeneuve's Incendies, proves that there's at least a minor exception to every rule. It's a bit long, and one side of its two-part narrative doesn't work quite as well as the other, but it's a strong and surprising piece of work. read more...

    Hoop Dreams (1994)

Hoop Dreams is probably still remembered as a movie that found life because of championing by Siskel and Ebert on their TV show. Both critics chose it as the best movie of 1994 (over Pulp Fiction), and in 1999 Ebert chose it as the best movie of the decade (Siskel had died a year earlier). It's probably also remembered for being three hours long, and for being perhaps the best basketball movie ever made. Fans may even remember the young ballplayers Arthur Agee and William Gates, who dared to dream. read more...

    Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

Director Jean-Marc Vallée, whose last movie was the bland costume epic The Young Victoria, films Dallas Buyers Club in a kind of grungy, muddy haze, perhaps trying to recall the look of 1980s home video. But this approach doesn't help the grim, queasy story about sickness go down any easier. The movie also takes many shortcuts, compressing and compacting its story down to manageable size. This technique squashes any potential moments of life, as well as making the main character's transformation seem too clean and abrupt. read more...
