Apollo 13 (1995)

After all the dreck I've had to sit through from director Ron Howard over the years, he seems to have finally graduated. He started off well enough, with the good-natured Splash and Night Shift, but one could see that he had the 1980s-director syndrome in that he wanted to be taken more seriously as an "artist." Going into his new film, I knew it was going to have to shatter my senses to win me over. It did. read more...

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

When I was 12 and first saw Raiders of the Lost Ark, I believe I would have given anything to be Indiana Jones, and sometimes I still feel like that. I've heard Harrison Ford in interviews saying that he would play Indy again in a heartbeat, while Han Solo from the Star Wars films holds no further interest for him. The Star Wars films are excellent in their own way, but Indy's adventures are so much more inviting. They truly awaken a sense of excitement, discovery, and curiosity. They take you back to childhood. Almost all summer movies today try to do that, but it's easy to resist them. They try to accomplish their task by being childish rather than childlike. Raiders of the Lost Ark is the real thing. read more...

The Fugitive (1993)

The Fugitive is a rare example of everything in the Hollywood machine coming together in the right way at the right time and working perfectly. Based loosely on the 1963 TV series created by Roy Huggins, the movie's plot takes some of its basic elements: Dr. Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford) comes home to find his wife's body; he fights with the one-armed man who committed the crime, but winds up getting arrested himself. When the prison transport bus crashes, Kimble escapes and proceeds to track down the one-armed man, hotly pursued by U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones) and his crew. read more...

Face/Off (1997)

I saw Face/Off on June 30, 1997, the day China took overcontrol of Hong Kong from Great Britain. This impending changeover is whatcaused director John Woo and many other film artists to come to the US. I don't know what Hong Kong's future will be like, but watching Face/Off on thatday, I can only say how lucky we are to have a great director like JohnWoo living and working among us. read more...

Unstoppable (2010)

Tony Scott's Unstoppable is, in a word, awesome. This is a major surprise, coming after such a stupid looking trailer, and after Scott's four other fairly mediocre movies with star Denzel Washington. (OK. Crimson Tide was pretty terrific, but that was 15 years ago.) Additionally, if one were to take a poll at the beginning of the year to choose between Scott's Unstoppable and his brother Ridley's Robin Hood, the odds would not have been on this runaway train movie. But while Ridley made a turgid, boring, serious summer adventure movie, Tony has made an exciting, lightweight, fast-paced Christmas season movie. And I take back any reservations I had before; there's no question about which is the superior movie. read more...
