The Best Man (1999)

Taye Diggs survived his own wedding earlier this year in Rick Famuyiwa's The Wood, and now must survive another catastrophic wedding, this time as best man, in the new comedy The Best Man, written and directed by Malcolm Lee (Spike's cousin). Malcolm was an assistant director for his famous cousin on such films as Clockers (1995) and Girl 6 (1996). Sadly, not much of Spike's visual flair rubbed off on Malcolm, whose first solo effort is often flat and dull looking. read more...

Hector and the Search for Happiness (2014)

Based on a novel by Fran├žois Lelord, Hector and the Search for Happiness comes at a good time. People seem generally unhappy right now, given the way the rich have ruined the economy and the job market, politicians are ignoring the climate crisis, and a general negativity threatens to prevent anything from being done about any of it. It would have been great if a movie could have given us some clues about how to be happy in the midst of all this. And for a little while, Hector and the Search for Happiness does all right, but then it flounders, flops, flips over and winds up at the usual place. read more...

Return to Me (2000)

Return to Me sounds like an awful movie. The premise is that an architect's wife dies, her heart gets donated to another woman, and the architect falls for the new woman with his wife's old heart. Ick. But as written and directed by the smart and lovely Bonnie Hunt, Return to Me comes across as not too yucky-sappy and indeed very entertaining, much like an old fashioned George Cukor movie. read more...

The Women (1939)

George Cukor's The Women isn't quite as nasty as it probably could have been, coming several years after the establishment of the Hays Code, but it's still plenty witty. It's certainly one of the weirdest movies ever produced in a Hollywood studio. Cukor's name is the only male one usually discussed in conjunction with the film; in the business he was known as a "women's director," which was code for being gay. (Additionally, F. Scott Fitzgerald reportedly worked on the screenplay, without credit.) Otherwise we get 2 hours and 13 minutes of nothing but XX chromosomes, and though men are often the topic of discussion, not one is ever seen. read more...
