The Lego Movie (2014)

One of the main themes of The Lego Movie is expressed in the difference between following instructions and using one's imagination to free-play. The glorious thing about the movie itself is that, at least on screen, it has enthusiastically embraced the latter. It could have been a corporate commercial enticing kids to buy more toys, but instead it's as free-flowing, energetic, and as fun as actual play. read more...

Chicken Run (2000)

On the Internet Movie Database's Top 250 List are two films called The Wrong Trousers (1993) and A Close Shave (1995). They've both been there for years, while other movies come and go. For the uneducated, they're Oscar-winning animated shorts starring claymation superstars, Wallace and Gromit. But though they only run half an hour each, they both have a Hollywood big-screen sensibility to them. They build suspense, they're funny and clever, and they culminate in slam-bang chase/action sequences. read more...

The Muppet Movie (1979)

Long before the cynical 1990s, before Meet the Feebles and "Greg the Bunny," came this post-modern puppet tale. The filmmakers took the familiar characters from the 1976-1981 television show, Kermit the Frog, Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, etc., and tell their "origin" story, following them from their humble beginnings to the gates of Hollywood. read more...

Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014)

The brilliant, time-traveling dog Mr. Peabody and his adopted boy Sherman first appeared in short bits on the "Rocky and Bullwinkle" cartoon show in the late 1950s. They were rendered in simple line drawings for quick and cheap television, but with sharp, clever, gag-based writing -- with humor that ranged from subtle to silly -- and a talented voice cast. read more...

The Grinch (2018)

This second big-screen re-do of Dr. Seuss's 1957 kids' book and Chuck Jones's1966 How the Grinch Stole Christmas! TV special is a little lightweight, but it's a drastic improvement over the gaudy, vulgar 2000 live-action movie by Ron Howard. To tell the truth, this Grinch's brevity and bright, bold colors may be just the kind of thing to relax and get lost in this holiday season. The Grinch has been softened a little so that he's not just mean for mean's sake; now he's mean because he's actually sad. This may sound silly, but it actually makes more sense, and the transformation from naughty to nice is more satisfying. (Before, the mean Grinch was so much more fun than the nice one.) Plus, now we don't have to endure the character being so darn nasty to his dog, Max. read more...
