Unknown Pleasures (2003)

The three main characters in Unknown Pleasures try their best to fill the long hours of the day, but even the effort of doing that much has become unrelentingly wearisome. And yet, despite the distinct lack of good times and belly laughs, Unknown Pleasures is a great film. read more...

A Touch of Sin (2013)

A Touch of Sin is the latest from China's Jia Zhang-ke, who is considered one of the finest filmmakers working today. Jia's films often deal with politics in China, specifically the country's newfound materialism after the Cultural Revolution, as well as the threat that government and giant corporations pose to the lifestyles of regular, working-class people. But he also tells his stories with a sly wit and keen personal observance, making them entirely universal. read more...

Vincere (2009)

Italian director Marco Bellocchio made what some consider one of the finest debuts in motion picture history: Fists in the Pocket (1965). His career since has been a bit sparse, but he has returned with a vengeance with his gorgeous new biographical epic Vincere. This is ordinarily not my kind of movie, but when the very fabric of the movie matches that of the subject matter, it rises above the usual, dull, self-important conventions of the historical genre. Instead of focusing on re-creating historical moments, Bellocchio invents one truly stunning image after another to fill in the blanks around the historical moments. read more...

The Earrings of Madame de... (1953)

The German-born Max Ophuls made films in five different languages over the course of his career, but he found his stride during his final, French period. The black-and-white The Earrings of Madame de... is of a piece with its predecessors, La Ronde (1950) and Le Plaisir (1952), but most consider it the best of the three. It still has Ophuls' skillful lightness and many amusing little moments -- it's far from somber -- but this film comes with its own unique emotional weight, mainly stemming from the middle-aged characters. read more...

White Material (2010)

At a glance, Claire Denis' White Material is probably one of her most accessible movies. It has an actual plot, and a big star in the lead role, Isabelle Huppert, here looking bright and tough, her freckles and blue eyes glinting and gleaming in the African heat. Even the Highlander himself, Christopher Lambert, is here, as well as cult actor Isaach De Bankolé (Casino Royale, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly). But it's also one of Denis' grimmest and most pessimistic films, although that doesn't stop me from wanting to see it again. read more...
