The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Seeing The Texas Chainsaw Massacre again recently has convinced me that it's quite a bit better than I initially judged. From the startling opening sequence with its popping flashbulbs to the jarring finale (mixing Marilyn Burns' blood-curdling screams with the sound of the chainsaw), it's an incredibly sturdy piece of work. read more...

Eaten Alive (1977)

This bizarre little item was director Tobe Hooper's follow-up to his groundbreaking The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It has a similar low-budget, grainy look, with Hooper's signature style on display, but it has an impressive cast full of veterans and cult stars. Neville Brand gives a strong performance -- with shaggy salt-n-pepper hair and taped-up glasses -- as Judd, a sexually-frustrated lunatic who runs a "hotel" near a Texas swamp; a giant crocodile lives nearby. Just about everyone who stops by gets slashed by Judd's huge sythe and fed to the beast (which looks fake and probably inspires more laughter and cheers than screams). read more...

Ms. 45 (1981)

Director Abel Ferrara's second feature was made for more money than his first cheapo, The Driller Killer, and it shows. Ms. 45 looks as cheap and sleazy as it needs to be, but this factor actually adds to the movie's vicious feel. Zoe Tamerlis (really Zoe Lund) plays Thana, the infamous mute seamstress who is raped, twice, in two unrelated incidents during the first ten minutes of the film. It's pretty hard to take, but the movie is on Thana's side, and she kills the second rapist. She goes a little crazy, and starts randomly killing all men. read more...

A Slit-Mouthed Woman (2007)

Koji Shiraishi's primal and perverse new film ventures into precarious places. Based on an actual urban legend, the slit-mouthed woman wears a long coat and a surgical mask to cover up her sliced-open mouth, and kidnaps children. In Shiraishi's film, she appears supernaturally by inhabiting people's bodies (they cough just before the beastie appears). A teacher, Ms. Yamashita (Eriko Sato), who has been forbidden to see her child due to past physical abuse, sees one of her students kidnapped and tries to solve the case. The film feels rushed and a bit of a mess, but its effective, low-tech imagery and sound effects more than make up for the lack of slick professionalism. The title was changed to Carved: The Slit-Mouthed Woman for its video release. Tartan's DVD comes with a making-of featurette, cast interviews, a trailer, TV spots and optional subtitles. read more...

The Green Inferno (2015)

Director Eli Roth returns to the director's chair with this vile, abhorrent, incompetent, dumb, hateful cannibal torture film. College freshman Justine (Lorenza Izzo), whose father is a UN lawyer, decides to become an activist to help stop female genital mutilation in other countries. She joins the charismatic Alejandro (Ariel Levy) on a trip to the Amazon to demonstrate against big companies bulldozing the rainforest. read more...
