Peeping Tom (1960)

From a screenplay by Leo Marks, Michael Powell's Peeping Tom (1960) is a cornerstone in film history. There are many great movies, but only a few (Citizen Kane, The Godfather, Pulp Fiction) have served as a turning point, a marker that changed everything that followed. Peeping Tom was the first movie to turn cinema back in upon itself and play with the theme of voyeurism. read more...

The Piano Teacher (2002)

Michael Haneke's The Piano Teacher comes with a huge amount of critical buzz from both the French critics and the East Coast critics. While I agree with them more often than not, I was completely baffled by this film. read more...

Murder by Contract (1958)

This B-film takes a shockingly low-key, detailed approach to the job of contract killer. The hero, Claude (Vince Edwards), is educated and has a regular job but has coldly decided he needs more money to buy a house that he wants. Calculating and emotionless, he decides that he'll make a good killer, and he's right. He's even hired to kill the man who got him started. read more...

Grizzly Man (2005)

Werner Herzog's mad quest for truth of vision has over the years perfectly adapted itself from his insane jungle epics with Klaus Kinski to the documentary format. This year, three Herzog documentaries have opened: The White Diamond, about the attempt to fly an experimental airship over a waterfall, Wheel of Time, about the Dalai Lama and an annual Buddhist gathering, and this one, about Timothy Treadwell and his efforts to study and protect Alaskan grizzly bears. read more...

The Penalty (1920)

The amazing Lon Chaney (1883-1930), also known as "The man with a thousand faces," was one of the greatest treasures in all of cinema. He could seemingly play any role, from clowns to monsters, and could literally play characters that were missing limbs. His makeup was so striking and complete that it might nearly be impossible to tell certain of his roles apart. But he was also among the most tragic of all actors. His characters routinely fell for some woman and failed to win her, not because of a mistake, but because of some inequality; he played on a basic fear that we are simply not worthy of our partners' love. (In real life, he was married, twice.) His characters usually met with a sad, sorry end. read more...
