The Hurricane (1937)

John Ford's South Seas adventure/romance The Hurricane is, on the surface, different from his other films, but as soon as you start watching, his familiar rhythms and themes come right out. It tells the story of a young, loving couple, Marama (Dorothy Lamour) and Terangi (Jon Hall), who live on a beautiful island. One day, Terangi goes off to work on a schooner, despite Marama's protests. In Tahiti, Terangi gets into a bar fight and is sentenced to six months in jail. He tries to escape, is caught, and his sentence is extended. Before he knows it, he's in for sixteen years. read more...

Bus Stop (1956)

Joshua Logan's Bus Stop marked a dramatic departure for Marilyn Monroe. She broadens her acting chops in the role of singer Cherie who meets a pushy and irrepressible cowboy (Don Murray), in town for the rodeo. It's disturbing to watch Murray stalking and tormenting her, but everything works out in the end. Logan's impressive Cinemascope work captures the pathos of the story rather than just the furniture and landscapes as other early, less imaginative widescreen movies did. Bus Stop was a favorite of Jean-Luc Godard and the other French New Wave film critics in the 1950s. Murray received an Oscar nomination for his performance. read more...

To Have and Have Not (1944)

Director Howard Hawks made a bet with Ernest Hemingway that he could make a good movie out of his worst novel. I don't know who won or how much the bet was for, but my money is on Hawks. read more...

Fish-out-of-water stories were very popular for a while in the 1980s (Beverly Hills Cop and 'Crocodile' Dundee were two favorites), but none had the classical resonance of this powerful Oscar-nominated drama. read more...

Black Narcissus (1947)

After the black-and-white of I Know Where I'm Going! (1945) and the mixed tones of A Matter of Life and Death (1946), Black Narcissus brings us back to full color cinematography, and what cinematography it is! Jack Cardiff won an Oscar for his work on the movie, and just last month won another for lifetime achievement. I daresay you might never see another film with such astonishing use of Technicolor. read more...
