Ted 2 (2015)

When Ted (2012) first appeared, it surprised by being touching as well as funny. Now its sequel surprises by being both funny and touching, as well as also boasting some big ideas. Written and directed by Seth MacFarlane, Ted 2 is extremely vulgar, filled with foul language and sexual innuendo, but it's not mean-spirited. It goes for comic rhythm rather than shock value, and the humor rises from the characters, their friendships, and their personalities. read more...

Scrooged (1988)

Bill Murray is the one of the greatest screen Scrooges in this 1980s updating, which features the funniest and most callous Christmas Special spoof ever filmed ("The Night the Reindeer Died"). He plays Frank Cross, television producer who plans a very expensive, live "Christmas Carol" production on Christmas Eve. He has stepped over everyone to get ahead, and this year three ghosts visit him to get him back on track again. read more...

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

John Hughes' four-film high school cycle somehow corresponded with my four years of high school. Sixteen Candles (1984) opened in the summer before my freshman year, and focused on freshmen. The Breakfast Club (1985) came in the spring of my sophomore year, followed by Weird Science (1985) in the summer before my junior year, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) -- about three seniors -- in the summer before my senior year. (After I graduated, Hughes moved onto things like Curly Sue and Home Alone.) read more...

Popeye the Sailor 1933-1938 Volume 1 (2007)

During the silent era and in the 1930s, the Fleischer brothers, Max and Dave, gave Walt Disney a run for his money with their innovative "Out of the Inkwell" series (with Koko the Clown) and their twisted, surreal Betty Boop cartoons. The Popeye cartoons, notably the double-length, full-color extravaganzas Popeye the Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor (1936) and Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba's Forty Thieves (1937) easily stack up against Disney's more celebrated efforts of the same period (The Old Mill, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, etc.). read more...

What's New Pussycat? (1965)

My friend, the excellent former film critic Rob Blackwelder, claims What's New Pussycat? as one of his three favorite films. In a huge lapse of friendship, I had never seen it until today, in 2014, when Kino Lorber released a new Blu-ray edition. I do wish I could join my friend in his enthusiasm, but I found the film to be only occasionally funny, and an uneasy mix of flabby and frantic. However, the excellent cast always seems to have been working extra hard, and their combined efforts result in a kind of amiable quality. They can make you smile, even if laughter is a bit much to ask. read more...
