22 Jump Street (2014)

The characters in the new sequel 22 Jump Street refer to the events of the previous movie, the surprise hit 21 Jump Street, as if they were a movie. 21 Jump Street (2012)

Based on the late 1980s TV series that starred a young Johnny Depp, the new movie 21 Jump Street might have been yet another example of Hollywood avoiding new ideas and lazily recycling old ones. Fortunately, the new movie is well aware of this trend, and says so, right in an early line of dialogue. This small gesture is enough to raise the movie to an entirely different level of awareness. read more...

Tower Heist (2011)

I have long maintained the idea that director Brett Ratner sold his soul to the devil in exchange for a Hollywood career. Not one of his movies has ever shown a speck of personality, humanity, or... soul. To date, none of them has ever been any good. Yet all of them have been hits, and all of them have received polite to warm responses from the critics. Unlike many real artists, he has never had any trouble, except from my small corner of the universe. Now even that much has ended for him. Tower Heist is his first good movie. Congratulations, Mr. Ratner. read more...
